We chose your hotel hoping for a restorative, peaceful family break. Unfortunately the experience was stressful and disappointing. The hotel has more of a large conference or events venue feel than a relaxing country retreat. The interiors are high-gloss and decorative, and the overall atmosphere felt impersonal rather than warm or restful. We were not informed at check-in that the restaurant needed to be booked well in advance. When we phoned on our first evening to make a reservation, we were told there was “nowhere in the hotel to eat before 8:45pm the entire week.” I had to clarify whether this meant the restaurant wasn't open or was fully booked, as the communication was unclear. No suggestions were offered for nearby pubs or restaurants and no assistance was given in helping us find an alternative after travelling with children. Our room also had maintenance problems (a clogged shower head and non-working bedside lights). We reported these but received no follow-up. The children’s swimming session was particularly awful. Families were instructed to sign in and wait in an empty café before being escorted together into the changing rooms, with an emphasis on wristbands and time limits rather than welcome or assistance. It felt procedural rather than family-friendly. Similarly, after a therapist called in sick, I was asked to change my appointment time and warned about a cancellation fee despite the change not being initiated by me. We also experienced disturbance from children running through corridors ringing doorbells. We reported this but it was not followed up, and we received no reassurance or acknowledgement afterwards, which meant we had to address the situation ourselves. Even more extraordinary, when I asked at reception for an email address to write to management I was given a generic one and received no reply. The next day I asked again and I had to resend my feedback to get a response. Overall, the hotel may suit conferences or large group stays, but it did not provide the restful family environment we had hoped for. Had the atmosphere been clearer in advance, we would have chosen differently. If I'm being brutally honest - the hotel is bling-y and charmless and maybe suits the kind of families who disturb others for fun and wouldn't mind being herded like cattle into a swimming pool. Because, despite being so well staffed it felt as though nobody was trained in actual customer service. The only enjoyable times we had were when we drove to lovely places off grounds. I can't believe I wasted our time on this experience.

While the hotel excels in many areas, there were some service inconsistencies that dampened what should have been a seamless 5-star experience. The Highlights • Family Friendly & Activities: The half-term programming was a huge hit. The staff members organising the fun were incredibly friendly and kept the children engaged. • Facilities: We absolutely loved the indoor swimming pool — it’s a beautiful space. • Housekeeping: The team was exceptional and thorough. Our room was kept in pristine condition throughout our stay. • Dining: Breakfast was delicious. Not only was the food high quality, but the service in the morning was genuinely impressive and attentive. Areas for Improvement Despite the high points, we encountered several frustrations that felt out of sync with a luxury establishment. 1. Lack of Contingency Planning The Halt Term 17:00 "Hot Chocolate and S’mores" on the terrace was cancelled due to rain, despite it not actually raining at the time. More importantly, for a 5-star hotel, I would expect a weather contingency plan. To make matters worse, the signage still advertised the event, leading to many disappointed guests being turned away. 2. Poor Check-in & Reception Service The main source of our dissatisfaction was the front desk. Our receptionist provided a series of errors: • Gave the incorrect timings for breakfast. • Referenced a dinner booking we never made. • Was very vague when asked about the kids' activities. Didn’t know any locations. • Failed to introduce us to the hotel facilities (we only found the playground by accident at the end of our trip). • When we returned to the desk to ask about turndown service, the receptionist didn’t look up from her computer, continuing her work while speaking to us. During this exchange, we requested kids' dressing gowns for the room, but this request was never followed through.
