We stayed for two nights to explore Mechelen mostly by foot. The location was good and convenient that parking is next to the hotel. When you step out of the hotel you are in the middle of town. Mechelen is a great city with, the canal tour was good and plenty of options to eat. Breakfast in the hotel was also decent. I would probably pick the same hotel if I went again.

The staff was very welcoming and friendly. The hotel was very well located to the town but a bit far to walk from the train station. The lobby was nice and welcoming. The room was a decent size, but the bathroom could have been cleaned and maintained better. The shower was moldy and some hair was left in the bathtub. The hallway carpets were so stained and overall the rooms are showing their age. But, for one night before flying out of Brussels airport it was a decent stop. The airport was about 30 min via taxi which was a bit on the high side but the driver was good.

The room had an unpleasant smell, like stagnant water. There were several unnecessary beds made up, while items such as water and chocolates were missing from the room. The breakfast selection also seems to be becoming more limited over time. I have been visiting this hotel for many years and unfortunately notice that the level of service is declining. In addition, it is now often no longer possible to book just one night, as a minimum stay of two nights is required. That is disappointing. The location remains excellent, and the service in the past was very good. It raises the question: why has this changed?

As for the missing water - we now possess a water fountain on our Mezzanine from which you can enjoy still, sparkling or oice cold water for free during the whole length of stay . We stayed four nights in June 2026; the hotel is very well-placed for sight-seeing in Mechelen, about 13 minutes walk from the railway station, and with bus stops (to/from station) 1 minute away. A few steps over the bridge brings you into the old town and its pubs, restaurants, shops and cathedral and the main square. The beds are super-comfortable, service professional and friendly. The bathroom is next to the bed, with shower and bath and basin, while the WC is close to the room door. The shower was powerful with plenty of hot water. The bar/restaurant area is quite small for a Novotel, but pleasant enough.

It was so so, the receptionist was not trained enough and charged my card with the full amount of the deposit. Later she had to cancel it. Despite she charged much higher amount than the night stay rate I could not order water in the bar and this required further intervention.
