The major selling points for this hotel are: its location within 10 minutes’ walk of the Colosseum and Forums, close to public transport (Metro) and reasonable restaurants, and its rooftop terrace bar. Perhaps as a result, it is in-demand and hence expensive. We arrived in early September by public transport from Roma Termini rail station, but please be warned it’s no fun trailing your luggage up the steps (no escalator or lift) at Colosseo Metro and then through the crowds of tourists outside the Colosseum itself! The hotel is easy to find, and stands out not least for its own distinctive architecture. Check-in was efficient and we were allocated a good room on a mid-floor facing Via Labicana. The room was quiet, in spite of the roadworks going on outside during the day, but rooms facing away from the street might be a little more peaceful if that matters to you. I know that rooms here do feel a bit small, and it you’re staying more than a couple of nights you may prefer to step up to a larger space. The hotel itself has been renewed inside since I last visited years ago, and is decorated in a clean and corporate style. The breakfast restaurant on the ground floor is pleasant. Breakfasts offer a vast range of pastries and a little of everything else - there’ll be something for you whatever your tastes, including a good gluten-free selection, but not much variety if you want to stay away from the sugar and heavy carbs. I can understand some reviewers feeling it’s not great value for money. The staff were very genuine and welcoming. If I’m staying again, however, I’d have breakfast here for convenience on the first morning, and then start using the local cafes instead. The rooftop pool area and pavilion bar offer beautiful reviews, especially in the evening. There is a good choice of light meals on the menu and pleasant wines and other drinks. We didn’t find it outrageously expensive compared to other city locations. Apart from the breakfast coffee, my only other minor gripe was sometimes rather inconsistent housekeeping (in terms of replacing toiletries and tea/coffee supplies), but the reception would have been able to deal with any of these if they’d been worth raising. All in all, an expensive hotel that offers quality and service in line with a mid-scale operation, but with a location and facilities that (only just) justify the high cost.

Good for a couple of nights

The location is good and close to the Colosseum but we prefer the other side of Rome if we went back, up by Vatican City is nicer with many more bars, restaurants and shops. Most of the places to eat in this area were on a roadside which wasn’t very nice. The hotel itself is fine for a few nights. The room was very small, limited space for clothes etc. Bed comfy. Our shower was on the opposite side of the room to the bathroom which was odd but didn’t cause any problems. We were at the back of the hotel and it was fairly quiet but they were digging up the road in front so if you are in a room at the front, it would have no doubt been noisy. The best bit about the hotel was the roof top bar and pool, which we went to every evening for a drink. We did eat there too, nothing special, although the sharing board was nice. Brilliant views of Rome and the Colosseum from there and it was lovely to watch the sun go down in the pool with a cocktail in hand. They had a DJ early one evening which was nice but this wasn’t advertised anywhere so I’m sure it would have drawn in more crowds if it had. Staff all very nice, but the usual Italian way with being slow to serve etc. something we had to get very used to in Rome as a whole.

The room was tiny but also had a column inside which made it even smaller. The column was covered in dust and never been cleaned. The room was very dark. We were on our honeymoon and asked if we could pay for an upgrade and were told there was nothing else available.

Dear Guest, Thank you for sharing your feedback. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience you faced during your stay, especially on such a special occasion as your honeymoon. We regret that the room size and cleanliness did not meet your expectations, and we will be addressing the cleanliness of the column with our housekeeping team immediately. While we aim to accommodate all upgrade requests, it’s disappointing to hear that we were unable to provide you with one during your stay. We appreciate your feedback and hope we can offer you a better experience in the future. Kind Regards Giuseppe Fioretti Room Division Manager Mercure Rome Centre Colosseum

The hotel is steps away from the Coliseum and other historical sites. Lost of choices of restaurants and night clubs.
