With renovations ongoing at main entrance to the Mercure, we checked in at the adjacent Novotel a short 100 m walk. Provided with a great newly renovated room in the Mercure complex. The location is great, and the shared large swimming pool and restaurant area are a winner for sure. Also, it is far enough from town and has a resort feel. The room, for $350 a night, was kind of tacky and bare. Cheap wardrobe furnishings, and couple of chairs with a table inside, outdoor table and chairs and no decorations. Expected a little bit more flair and decor. Maybe even a feature wall colour. The bed was very comfortable and big. The food at the shared restaurant is great, and so is the service.

Check-in, was not asked if needed help with heavy bags. That was ok, I am quite independent. Set off to find the room which was up stairs, no lift. So back to reception lugging bag. Staff member put bag in buggy and back to building. He carried the bag up the stairs. I was grateful for this, but he then left the bag at top of stairs and walked off - no offer to open door and put luggage inside or wait and see if door opened etc - lack of common courtesy. Fine, the room was ok, bath soap container had fallen off shower wall and was on floor of shower, but was not broken. I had enquired at reception about transfer to airport as my flight was departing at 1.10am. I know it's only a 7minute walk but I was reluctant to do this in the middle of the night. I was told no problem, just call on 9 and give 10 minutes notice. So dutifully at 12.05 called reception. Told 5 to 10 minutes would be transfer. I asked for help with getting bag downstairs. No-one came. I called again 10 mins later. Yes they are on the way. No-one. 5 more minutes. Called again. Decided needed to get bag down myself and get to reception. When got there the shuttle pulled up with load of passengers and luggage which needed to be unloaded before I could be taken to the airport. I then had to run to get bag dropped, went through security, ran up stairs and joined the queue of passengers already boarding. The idea of staying at airport hotel for convenience was thoroughly disproved by my experience at Mercure Hotel Darwin. I had just spent two weeks volunteering as a dentist in a remote village in Timor Leste, with 2 weekends, 4 nights in total, staying at Sunset Inn by Pro-Ema in Dili. The service there was exemplary: friendly, polite and efficient. I have never had to write a damning review before and at age 66 I have travelled a lot and stayed in many hotels all around the world. Very disappointing.
