Sofitel Sanya Leeman Resort 5 stars

Overall, I had a very enjoyable stay at Sofitel Sanya, largely because of the excellent service from the staff, which genuinely elevated the experience. A special mention to Nikki at the front desk/guest relations team (apologies if I got the title wrong) — she was incredibly helpful, responsive, and consistently went above and beyond to assist with arrangements throughout our stay. Her professionalism and warmth made us feel genuinely well taken care of. The resort itself is relaxing and service standards overall were strong. That said, there are a few areas for improvement. While the property is still pleasant, parts of the hotel do feel somewhat dated and less refreshed than expected for a luxury Sofitel property. Some areas and rooms could benefit from updating to feel more contemporary and premium. The food experience was unfortunately average — both breakfast and dinner were quite underwhelming and did not feel at the level expected for a Sofitel property. Another inconvenience was the Accor Gold member dining benefit experience. It was not always clear whether the Gold discount applied, as staff had to check each time whether the existing promotion or the member discount offered better value. While appreciated that staff tried to help, a simpler and clearer process would make things much more seamless for guests. Lastly, the air-conditioning in the room could be improved. Even with the temperature set to 16°C and fan speed on high, the room never felt properly cool, which affected comfort, especially in Sanya’s warm weather. Despite these points, the service — especially Nikki’s hospitality — was the highlight of the stay, and overall we still had a pleasant experience.

Good but aging hardware, disappointing hospitality. Underwhelming check in and check out experience. My platinum status wasn’t verbally recognised. I wasn’t told the activities at the resort, location of the breakfast restaurant, nor was I told the location of the executive lounge without asking. The room that we were originally assigned to had smell of cigarette smoke, which was very surprising given the resort is a 5 star property. There were no welcome snacks or fruit platter until I called. The presence of the Typ Greenleaf tour group also created less of a relax and welcoming atmosphere which to be honest I would have reconsidered my booking if I knew in advance.

I recently stayed at the Sofitel Sanya, hoping for the luxury experience the brand once promised. Unfortunately, this visit was a profound disappointment from start to finish. Loyalty Program? What Loyalty Program? As a loyal Accor member, I was shocked that the staff had absolutely no knowledge of the loyalty program. No recognition, no benefits, not even basic awareness—it felt like I was checking into a budget motel, not a five-star French-branded resort. Communication Nightmare Language barriers made every interaction a struggle. Requests were misunderstood or ignored, and basic information required repeated explanations. It’s exhausting when a hotel of this caliber cannot facilitate smooth guest-staff communication. Food: Oily, Heavy, and Unhygienic The culinary experience was dreadful. Every dish felt burdened—overly greasy, super oily, and lacking any finesse. The Thai dishes were particularly offensive: one arrived with a human black hair embedded in it. Absolutely unacceptable. I lost my appetite completely. Check-in Disaster The front desk team was arrogant and unwelcoming. Instead of a warm greeting, I received curt, dismissive attitudes. The check-in process was chaotic, slow, and frustrating—no one seemed to care. Missing the Old Days I’ve stayed here before, when European management ran the show. Back then, the food was delicious, service was polished, and staff understood hospitality. Those days are gone. The current management has clearly let standards collapse. Verdict Avoid until serious changes are made. Sofitel Sanya is riding on a faded reputation, offering overpriced mediocrity with a side of hygiene issues. I will not return.
