Mercure hotel has a great location which was perfect for our brief trip to Oxford, however, the temperature was on full. After trying to turn it down, the dial came off in my husbands hand. The windows wouldn’t open. There is no phone in the hotel room to contact guest services, so unfortunately a really uncomfortable night. The hallways also has a lingering smell of sewage.

I was initially assigned a room with no portable hand shower. Upon complaining, I was relocated to a new room- much smaller, lesser amenities (dyson heater instead of an wall mount, no slippers), curtains that did not close and a bathroom room door with poor hinge that never closed. The location of the hotel is great but the guest rooms need to be maintained better. Not the room I expect for the cost I paid.

Property was fine, and breakfast was good. However, staff on phone refused to help me with my issue- I had mistakenly reserved for the wrong night, a day earlier than we actually needed. Since it was done through a third party, and past the cancellation/modification date, the third party would not honor the reservation for the following day. I called the hotel and was told the same, and I had no choice but to secure rooms for the correct night. This was distressing because the hotel was paid twice, and I was out nearly $1000 dollars for the 4 rooms. Not nice, and you can be sure I will not be looking at Mercure again.

I chose to stay in Mecure because of the central location and I’m very happy about it during my stay. Within about a 10-minute walk, whether I’d finished shopping with one or two bags from Westgate, or needed a quick break to use the restroom in the middle of the day, or wanted to come back before dinner to change into something nicer — it was all so easy to go back and forth between the city centre and the hotel. For tourists, this location also feels very safe at night because it’s in a major area. The hotel rooms are just right — nothing too fancy. As it’s a city-centre hotel, you naturally wouldn’t expect things like a swimming pool anyway. But for a short city stay (not a resort-style garden hotel holiday), I think it does an excellent job. One thing I really have to praise is the breakfast. I’ve stayed in about six or seven hotels during my time at Oxford, and this breakfast ranks really high. It’s not overly fancy, but it’s genuinely satisfying, fills you up properly, offers good variety, and the timing is flexible. It really gives you the energy you need to start your day at school feeling fully charged.
