I really wish I read the reviews. I checked in to room 118 and the age/wear of the room makes it look like a horror movie scene. The phone does not work, the sink plug is broken/jammed in the sink and the water overflows. I am absolutely disturbed by the review left 5 days ago where someone had a stranger enter their room in the middle of the night and police were not allowed into the hotel.

Disappointing.

Stayed for National Swim Meet, and was surprised to find, when I went to use the pool, that I was charged £10 per visit. Especially annoyed as I had not been advised of this when I booked. Also surprised and disappointed to find that the bar did not stock Bacardi, pretty standard for most good bars. Room was a little shabby, with toilet door handle coming off. Beds comfortable, and meals good.

Stayed in room 534 on 30th was due to be there 2 days. Arrived late 8/9 due to weather. Walked into room above me ceiling was stained and unsightly, room smelt damp and dusty. Air conditioning on full pelt was freezing cold. Adjusted air conditioning to warm room was blasted with damp dusty burning smell... Asked when checked in about room service and was assured all details in room. Got changed into nightwear and looked for details to order room service none!!! Could not be bothered to get dressed to go downstairs ate biscuits in bag. Stay regularly in Sheffield second time here would not go back awful room.

We have used this hotel quite a number of times for “weekend” breaks in Sheffield and always enjoyed the experience. We returned after a gap of a few years. For us the closure of John Lewis and Debenhams have killed city centre shopping, so little reason to visit Sheffield these days. Check-in was friendly and efficient, check-in time was 3pm so we had quite a wait, but this enabled us to have a pleasant drink and light lunch in the bar. Our room 422 was a good size and clean. Furnishings were basic but adequate, (apart from no TV in the room on arrival but this was soon rectified). Some maintenance is obviously required, one wardrobe door was missing and veneer edgings on the furniture damaged or missing. We also noticed lots of bumps and scratches along the corridor walls and doors. There is no soap provided other than the dispensers fixed to the separate shower wall and beside the sink. The bath had a soap dish but with no soap within reach it is hard to see how you would use the bath tub effectively. Bed and bedding were comfy and cosy. Breakfast was good but hot food on cold plates is never a good idea. We recall previously being seated and tea or coffee brought to the table. Now you have to “brew” your own tea in a vulgar “mug” (no cups & saucers) using tea bags and hot water from the coffee machine, also no small milk jugs just one very large and heavy jug which everyone had to queue to use. We got the impression that a “cost cutting” program may be in place which seemed out of step with the room price of £202! Two weeks earlier the price was £160! Overall, our stay was OK but some worrying signs of the hotel going downhill, that would be a shame. For this visit we have downgraded our rating to 3 star. With new competition in the area (Radisson Blu) we may consider other places to stay for future visits.
