Old fashioned and badly maintained apartment

Poor maintenance of apartment, not only esthetic but functional like no closing windows. New TV also not functioning the cable tv system ( pdf with instructions not renewed for the new tv)

Worn out hotel

Rooms are old, not well kept up, lots of street noise cause windows do not close tight, kitchen lacks the very basics, even to heat up some water for tea or coffee ( why even bother having a kitchen??), bathroom is moldy, cracked sink, etc. The only one good thing about this hotel is it’s proximity to the beach, absolutely nothing else.

I've been coming to this hotel for a few years now, and while there's room for improvement, I always have a great time here. The staff is super friendly, though I've only spoken to one woman in English. She's always there with a big smile, full of energy! The other staff are also helpful, but it’s handy to know a bit of Portuguese. I’ve noticed many of the same people working here since I first stayed, so if you're a frequent guest, they’ll remember you. As for the rooms, the first time I stayed, I wasn’t too impressed. The standard rooms are a bit outdated and could use a refresh. I switched to a superior room, and it was a big improvement—I really liked it! Since then, I’ve only booked the superior rooms; they’re worth the small extra cost. While not everything is perfect, the beds are comfy, the pillows are great, the shower has strong water pressure (which I love), the AC works well, and the view is stunning. Housekeeping does a good job too, everything is clean, and I haven’t noticed any missed spots. Those are the things I value most and they are all great. The breakfast is reasonably priced. Initially, I wasn’t a fan, but over the past year, it has really improved. There’s a nice selection of fresh cakes, juices (though a bit watery), good coffee, local fruits, and some (local) pastries. Sometimes you will even find pizza slices, lasagna and other food that would normally be more eaten for lunch or dinner by foreigners. There’s usually a chef who makes custom tapioca, eggs, or omelets, which I think is a big plus! It’s nothing too fancy, but everything you need is there, including a variety breads, yogurts, chia seeds, oats, and flaxseed. During São João, the breakfast is amazing with lots of traditional food, and I end up eating way more than I should! The hotel’s facilities are decent. The gym is basic but functional, and the pool is a bit small and partly shaded, but it’s nice for those who enjoy it. The location is a major highlight. Just cross the street, and you’re on the main beach avenue (Beira Mar), with 7km of boulevard lined with shops, restaurants, bars, and plenty of sports activities. After 5 in the afternoon, it gets lively, and it’s very safe. There’s also a handy supermarket nearby (São Luiz). On the downside, the rooms can be a bit noisy, especially with slamming doors from neighboring rooms, which are tough to close quietly. The rooms could use some maintenance (the reception area looks great though), and other Mercure hotels in Brazil seem better maintained. The balcony is more for show—there’s no real seating, though I sometimes bring out a chair from the room to enjoy the view. Would score with an 8,5 on average. I will come back (even this week), but I would love to see a Grand Mercure, Novotel or Mercure boutique, coming to Fortaleza as well.
