Unfortunately our experience was not what we expected from the Mercure brand. For the price paid, the room was small, the bathroom was the smallest we have ever encountered and would best be described as a cubicle rather than a 'room'. Having said that, the bed was very comfortable. The majority of staff were friendly, with only a couple on the more 'surly' side. The first morning at breakfast I asked for an English breakfast teabag and a smiling young waitress immediately went and fetched one. On the second day my wife asked an older waitress for the same (all that was available was a selection of loose tea leaves with no obvious provision for brewing the drink other than in a cup) and was told 'They are only for the rooms, not here'. Also, the fresh fruit selection was not the most extensive we have been offered. It seemed a guest had to ask for everything, nothing was offered without prompting. It was almost complete 'self-service'. Mainly it was the lack of value for money that caused our disappointment and, as another guest remarked, the premises 'had no soul', it had no atmosphere.
