Staff were really nice and friendly. On arriving at my room the sofa bed was not made up ready and there was no towels in the room. The mini bar was also empty. I also wasn't very impressed by an Xbox being available in the lobby 24/7 for children to access to play Fortnight. There were guests watching the Olympics during breakfast time and children came to the TV and turned the Xbox on. I would like to see this available to children on a separate smaller TV in an area away from the bar and away from where people are eating and relaxing.

Excellent staff

The hotel was challenged during our stay of 26th to 30th July by sudden and rolling staff shortages caused by the ‘pingdemic’. We were struck by how unfailingly courteous and cheery reception, bar, and restaurant staff were when faced with this serious operational difficulty. They are clearly an excellent team of workers.

Not worth the money.

Room not ready at 1400 as advertised. Put bottled water in fridge. Returned at night to see fridge light flashing and water warm. Air con not working and had to be controlled by reception which we could not override. I cannot work put any reason why room not cleaned or towels replace. Covid is not a valid excuse. WiFi wouldn’t work and reception staff didn’t care. Barman helped me with different site and password but only worked in bar not in room.

well located good stay.

Hotel itself is lovely and well situated in the centre of York. However the lack of care and attention to detail was disappointing. Rooms were not clean, had to ask for toilet paper (which the staff delivered to our table in the lobby whilst we were having a drink..) and just general house keeping was lacking

Not value for money

The washroom and shower room/sink in 2 separate rooms make so inconvenient. Also, the feeling of sitting in the loo in such small area is so bad.

Lovely stay, well located, friendly staff

We had a lovely stay. Great atmosphere in the hotel. Staff were friendly and made my little boy feel welcome. We had dinner and Breafast in the restaurant and both were lovely. We couldn't book the pool this time but hopefully we will be able to next time. Hotel is in a great location. We have stayed here before and will definitely be coming back again.

Well located

2 night stay. Took an hour to check in. Not able to eat at the hotel on my birthday, due to the restaurant being closed. No bar snacks or room service anymore. Room very nice. Staff polite and welcoming. Breakfast - big queue for cooked food.

Good location, noisy hotel

Check in took 30 min and couldn't use swimming pool the first day as fully booked, went for a quiet break but was woken up at 6am every morning by people walking past and using lifts

Still work ongoing but overall very good , still no Café / restaurant and staff levels low mainly due to covid19 . but overall present and relaxing close to town and market area with parking available at a price.

Booked a Junior Suite and was informed it would be ready for occupation by 1500. The room was no available until 1625. The suite itself was very spacious and well equipped. However, the Nespresso coffee machine was full of empty capsuals and water was in the container. The kettle also had water in it. There were two toilet rolls but both were only around half the size of a new one Two adults and two children using the room so had to chase the cleaners for some more. Only four tea bags and four Nescafe coffee sasha's. Contacted room service for more. The air conditioning did not work properly and considering that the temperature outside was around 27 degrees, the air con should have been a welcome relief. On the positive side, the room was very clean and all our requirements were acted upon efficiently. We booked a slot for the swimming pool and was informed that only two families were allowed in at any one time with a 25 minute swim scheduled. this proved adequate. All reception and bar staff wore face masks at all times but the housekeeping staff did not. Maybe they should wear them on the corridors?

Fairly disappointing

Location good. Disappointed as bathroom needed cleaning at 10pm at night. Hair in bath. Bath wall tiles dirty - I could scrape scum off with my nails. Black build up of dirt in shower screen plastic seal too. Three fairly large brown stains on carpet was very undesirable and noise from banging doors from other residents. Woken following morning by a family shouting at their kids. Swimming pool mosaic tiles need a clean too - obvious where water has sat and left a film of dirty all round pool. Overall, £222 not well spent for 1 night! Complained at Reception and expected some compensation but nothing!

When we checked in for 2 rooms at 330pm one of the rooms hadnt been cleaned still unmade bed dirty towels etc from previous guests. Had to wait hour for another room. Good job had a 2nd room to hold up in. Got the new room which was fine and received a free drinks voucher. That night in room 230 the noise was horrendous with clanking pipes and boiler noises. The room itself needed an upgrade with stains on carpets and walls. A lick of paint and new carpet wouldn't ho a miss. For £258 for 2 rooms plus car parking I feel I didnt have value for money. Will be giving this hotel a miss.

Great staff, nice hotel but time to stop using Covid as excuse for lack of services

Negatives first. Despite checking in online 48 hours before we still had 25 minutes wait to get keys. The two staff were doing their best but we seemed to gain nothing from online check in. I received a text at 2.30pm to tell me to collect my keys from 2pm, having already collected them. Secondly, despite the relaxation of restrictions there is still no servicing of rooms. Even the telephones have been removed. (If each room is thoroughly cleaned between occupancies surely cleaning a telephone would be easy?) The “WhatsApp “ method of communication led to us being without towels most of our second day. And finally the increasingly prevalent habit of hotels charging guests for use of the car park. I never understand the justification for this. However, before this review looks too critical, we had a great stay notwithstanding these few moans. The hotel is in a great location and the staff were excellent, professional and friendly. The room was a good size, bright, and clean. It was great to have the shower room separate from the toilet and the shower was really good. We will no doubt return but hopefully the lack of room services will be over.

Staff was nice.

Unfortunately I was left extremely disappointed with my stay at your York Hotel. This was booked as a surprise my girlfriends birthday. On arrival I was happy with the check in and helpfulness of staff, however when we got to our room, it was a massive disappointment. When we opened the curtains we were greeted with a slate roof that could not be seen beyond. The bathroom was dirty with the remaining shower residues of previous guest! The seal to the shower was mouldy and looked to be full of pink soap scum from a build up of not being cleaned properly. There was also crumbs on the floor at the bottom of the bed and the desk / dressing table area were marked with cup rings and an iron mark. Cob Webb’s in the windows and the seal to the fridge was broken. The WhatsApp service was if no use as no one answers. Our stay really did not meet the expectations of your website advertising.

PaulandJulie 28/07/2021 TripAdvisor review

We stayed at Novotel York with my parents to celebrate mine and my dads 'big' birthdays. The hotel is situated in a quiet road backing onto the river. The reception/bar area/restaurant were all lovely, very modern and spotlessly clean. My parents had an accessible room which was well thought out and very spacious. Our room was a superior family room which was big enough for 3 of us but guessing it would be a squeeze if any more. On entering the room we were disappointed to note several stains on the carpet which we cleaned up with baby wipes. We expected more from Novotel. We used the swimming pool - booking our 20 min slots. This worked well until one family wouldn't get out so we wasted some of our swimming time. Breakfast was amazing, wonderful choice and everything continuously topped up. We would definitely recommend Novotel York and are already planning our return visit :)

Everything with the room and service was spot on, the only flaw as I would have is that we stayed in the junior suite which was a great room, however, there was no actual dressing table with a mirror in front of it, we had to use a bedside table with a mirror near it.the only other issue may it be a small one was as we was with children the tv did not even have cbeebies or a children’s based channel to watch on both the huge tv’s. otherwise all was well.

I stayed at Novotel York Centre for 3 nights immediately before the November lockdown. I couldn't have wished for a more pleasant stay. The hotel is conveniently located, being only a short drive into York from the surrounding road network (with its own open air and spacious car park) and a 10 minute walk from the old city centre. The staff were remarkably friendly and helpful throughout my stay. Particular mention should go to the young lady on check in and the young lady serving breakfasts. The room was extremely comfortable and the bathroom very well appointed. Both were faultlessly clean. Food was delicious and generous helpings too. It's quiet there at night, so you get a good night's sleep. Excellent wi-fi as well.
