I recently chose the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins to celebrate my 40th birthday, and unfortunately, the stay was a source of constant frustration. As a professional chef who has worked with high-caliber industry figures like Gabriel Martin, I had expectations for the service and dining standards that were, sadly, not met. Key issues included: Dining Standards: The room service was completely unacceptable. Meals arrived cold and were effectively inedible. Even basic amenities like bottled water were not provided—I had to call to request them, which is not the level of service expected from a 5-star hotel. Furthermore, there was no transparency regarding which minibar snacks were complimentary, leaving guests to guess what is covered. Billing & Transparency: The billing process was opaque. Upon using express check-out, I found unexpected additional charges on my final bill. To add to the frustration, there was an unexplained rate discrepancy between Tuesday and Wednesday that staff could not clarify. Management & Service: When issues arose, the management team was dismissive and unhelpful. There was a complete lack of accountability, which was particularly disheartening given that I had chosen this hotel specifically to celebrate a milestone birthday and to align with a culinary training session. I selected this property based on its reputation and my own professional interest in the industry, but this stay has fundamentally changed my view of the brand. I would strongly advise against choosing this hotel for any special occasion or professional visit.
