There are no train stations in Manly however there are plenty of public buses to get you around Manly and to other sydney suburbs. You can travel the central area of Manly and the beaches by foot or bike. Manly Wharf is centrally located and offers public ferries that can take you to Circular Quay in Sydney, close to Sydney CBD. To hop on public transport, purchase an opal card with pre-loaded funds, or you can tap your credit or debit card. You cannot use cash on Sydney public transport.

What to do in Manly

Go swimming Manly has beaches on both its western end and eastern end with a shopping and dining strip separating the two. To the south lies national parks with lookouts and walking trails. For those who like surfing or wave beaches, the eastern end of Manly is where you'll find the main beach - Manly Beach. To the right of Manly Beach, tucked away, is Shelly Beach. Here you'll find colourful reefs for snorkelling and scuba diving, and calmer waters. To the west end, lies Manly cove, close to the wharf and with little to no waves for those who prefer calm seas. Take in the scenery on a walk Manly's southern end is dominated by national parks and lookouts offering many scenic spots for nature lovers to revel in. For a walk that passes many of Manly's main attractions, such as Queenscliff and Shelly Beach, take the Manly lagoon to North Head walking track. A 10km loop, this walk is mainly flat and not classed as difficult. Once in the National Park, there are a number of walking tracks to take.

There have been shark sightings at Manly Beach though no fatalities have been recorded since 1936. Since this time shark nets have gone up and there are patrols to ensure visitors are alerted to any sharks in the area. Over at Shelly Beach, a popular snorkelling spot where there are colourful corals and sea life, there are shark varieties though these are generally not dangerous. It's still a good idea to exercise caution when swimming at Manly Beach. Make sure to stay between the flags and only swim when it's patrolled by lifeguards

If visiting Manly over summer, it can get busy, particularly over the weekends. Parking can be tricky to find and reservations are recommended for some better known dining establishments. Luckily if you're staying in Manly and your accommodation has a car park as with The Sebel Sydney Manly Beach, you can avoid the hassle of trying to find a park and will find everything Manly has to offer within walking distance

There are two ways to get to the CBD from Manly via ferry. One is the cheaper standard ferry and the other is the fast ferry. The standard ferry takes about 30 minutes from Manly wharf to Sydney CBD while the fast ferry takes about 20 minutes. The fast ferry costs more but is slightly faster and also has a licenced bar on board. Both are boarded at Manly Wharf and end at Circular Quay, Sydney
