Really well located, close to shopping, Hafn city and Central Station. Room was very clean and sufficiently spacy. Breakfast was good. For some reason, check in and check out took very long, where I was just standing there waiting for the person at counter to type and look at his screen (people at other counters were checked in much quicker). Particularly on check out, the person at counter allowed himself to be interrupted mid-check out by another guest who had a question which seemed to drag out. Felt weird.

We arrived late and there was a problem with the computer. The receptionist was trying to charge the card I had on file but it declined, so we proceeded to try every card I had (all had plenty of credit and work fine abroad) and they all declined. Our 6 and 8 year old boys were exhausted, and this took a lot of time, with me contacting the bank at one point and trying to check on various banking apps what was going on with the payment. Eventually the receptionist agreed to let us sort it in the morning. It’s a shame this had not been agreed sooner. He also told us that the boys had free breakfast included, regardless of whether we ate/paid for a breakfast (which at €29 euros each, we decided against for a Novotel breakfast). The next morning, the day receptionist was able to charge the card first time and the balance was settled. The rooms were very hot and could not be cooled (air con set to heat only). The window opened in one room but not the other. The beds were uncomfortable and pillows very hard and stiff. The first morning, we went out as a family for breakfast, so did not take up the offer of the free one for the kids. On day 2, as we had an early start, we decided to let the boys eat at the hotel. I checked with the host at breakfast that it was ok for the boys to just have the free breakfasts, and whilst he could not speak English or German very well, I was confident that we had confident that he had understood that it was only the boys rating and confirmed it was free for them. I left my wife with the children whilst I packed our day bags and popped out to buy sandwiches for lunch. In my return I was horrified to hear that my wife had been followed around the buffet by two men checking what she was picking for the boys. They then came to her with a chip and pin machine and insisted she paid for herself too, even though she was not eating - and did not eat anything at all. In my absence, they intimidated her into paying the €29 euros. She then found the original receptionist who had confirmed the breakfast was free for the boys. He apologised and said that he had made a mistake. When I got back, I spoke to him and said it was fine that he had made a mistake, but we had checked with the host in the restaurant too and only taken the breakfast in good faith that it was free. The boys ate very little. The host then disappeared and the new host confirmed it was not free. I checked the website, which again states kids eat free and there are no terms and conditions around adults eating too. I asked for a manager and three staff appeared, all confirming that the breakfast was chargeable and it was irrelevant that we have been given the wrong information twice. They refused to refund it and said to speak to the restaurant staff for a refund instead. The restaurant staff refused to refund it too, and we had to leave in a hurry to get to our activity that we had booked for the day. At €510 for 2 nights, The service and quality of rooms at this hotel is well below par: On previous stays in Hamburg, The Henri Downtown, across the road, as well as the Adina, Cloud One, Moxy and even Premier Inn were all much better value and have far better customer service. I won’t be booking the Novotel again in Hamburg and cannot recommend it. The humiliation of having multiple members of staff gang up on my wife and I in a public area to argue with us about a small payment is completely unacceptable.

The check-in was very brief. There was no mention of my Gold status, which I have had at multiple other accor properties, or the associated benefits such as welcome drinks etc... I wasn't told anything about the WiFi or anything. It was "here's your key!" The room was decent but the bathroom had a bad smell most of the time we were there, like the drains were blocked somewhere else and causing the odour. Outside the front of the hotel were hundreds and hundreds of cigarette butts and litter.
