Sofitel Barú Cartagena Sometimes when you look at a hotel online you are not sure if it’s for you. This hotel is even better than it looks. Our beachfront room was perfect. It took nearly every comfort into its execution and we loved our stay. The decor is contemporary and earthy and the lighting is layered and sophisticated. The bathroom, closets and coffee area are all well thought out. I would add a dimmer in the toilet and a few hooks in the room to help guests organize their robes, beach bags and wet towels. A small ask for a really nice room. Throughout our stay we found little eatable surprises with sweet handwritten notes left by the staff. A lovely touch. Everything we asked about was addressed quickly and to our satisfaction. When we first got the hotel on a Friday it seemed as if there was music everywhere which we loved. We were also able to dance to the rooftop band at sunset for the first 3 nights and the live band that performed at Bahia for lunch one day. They seem to have a parade of traditional dancers that come through the resort around 5pm each night and we found that to be a fun way to get ready for the evening. Sadly when Monday came we were informed that there was only music on the weekends. I’d like to inform the hotel that when you are vacationing, weekends are no different than week days and when you have a captive audience due to a remote location such as this you are expected to keep your guests entertained at night. We loved the buffet breakfast at Calablanca restaurant and thought that there really was something for everyone. There were so many fresh and made to order options and the service was friendly and professional. We did not enjoy this restaurant at dinner at all. It was as if there was a totally different chef at night. Humo their premiere restaurant is small and has an intriguing asian fusion menu. We enjoyed the cold items that we ordered on the first night very much including a fantastic ceviche. The second night we dined there we encountered many issues with the hot items. Tough steak with gristle. The pork belly was served cold and was not seared and we found that strange and unappetizing. The execution felt off. The demeanor of the wait staff is set at “special occasion” but the execution felt off. There was lots of changing of flatware and asking to remove my not yet finished cocktail. When the food is not satisfying, that all seems fussy and annoying. While at the resort we spent a half day at the National Aviary which we highly recommend. Don’t miss the twice daily show. I took lots of amazing photos while we walked the many bird habitats at The Aviary. The hotel will arrange a driver to take you there and back. On another day, we also hired a small boat on our own to take us to The Rosario Islands for a full day and that was very enjoyable. The group boats look very crowded, so I am happy we didn’t take that option. One thing we did not understand before we arrived at all is that you are 1.5 hour drive from Old Town and Getsemani where all the action is. Half that drive is through a dark island with dirt roads. There are no towns most tourist would want to visit on the island. You are most probably not leaving the resort for any meals. I wish I had known that before we booked. In all, our 5 night stay was restful and enjoyable. The beach is gorgeous and the beach staff are attentive. The beach side lunch bbq gave us the best grilled spiny lobster of our lives, Don’t skip that! The choice of pools is fantastic. The poolside service is great. We loved the food at Bahia, the beachside restaurant for lunch and dinner. The concierge staff was friendly and eager to help with anything you need. The onsite boutique had some nice resort items for sale. There are many lovely spaces within the resort to make your stay a little adventure. I recommend this resort. We also spent 5 nights closer to town and that was a great combo for us with relaxed beach side experience in Barú and then an exciting in-town experience.

Christmas Treat!

We spent six nights at the Sofitel Baru and could easily have stayed for six months. As soon as you enter the lobby, it is an oasis of calm. Our room overlooked the beach and was very comfortable. The aircon worked very well also. The best thing about the hotel is the staff. They go out of their way to look after you. All staff that we encountered were very friendly and very helpful and it is clear that there are a lot of staff in the background making the hotel the gem that it is. We would like to thank Mariana at the concierge desk in particular. She was of great assistance to us in relation to a travel issue we had prior to our arrival which we very much appreciated. She also handled our booking enquiries and organised some trips for us at very short notice. All done with a great smile and great professionalism. The rest of the concierge team were also very helpful. We mainly ate in the main restaurant where the food was very nice, in particular the breakfast buffet. The Christmas Eve buffet was spectacular! There is a standard a la carte menu for lunch and dinner. We were very well looked after by the team there, especially by Juan, Brenda, Ramses and Esteban, but everybody there was very helpful. Mariana and Yannick (hotel manager) gave us great recommendations for the rest of our holiday in Colombia which were gratefully received and very much enjoyed. We would love to return to the Sofitel Baru some day, if you go you will be glad you did.
