The resort seems brand new and is absolutely gorgeous. We had a two bedroom suite with whirlpool that would likely have cost twice as much at a similar resort in the Caribbean. Our family loved the breakfast each day with the ripe fruit, fresh pastries omelette bar. Service from everyone at the resortwas impeccable. The staff at the pool and beach were more than willing to assist in finding chairs and setting up a shaded spot. Our family of 4 including 17 and 19 year olds found something to do including the spa, gym, sunsets at The Pergola bar that made it feel luxurious but not pretentious.

Disappointed

We spent 6 nights in Cartagena at two wonderful 5 star hotels and then decided to head over to the Isla Baru Sofitel because it is also marketed as a 5 star hotel. We were very disappointed. I’m sure that Colombian families who want to escape the stifling heat in the city and have a beach staycation in a quiet and remote location might find the Sofitel fine. But it is NOT a five star hotel! It feels like the early stages of a real estate development with a hotel on premises. The accommodation and furniture layout make for very cramped spaces and not even close to those of a five star hotel (or four star for the matter). We booked a two room suite with a jacuzzi on the balcony. The bathtub was only about 3 feet from the bed. You feel like you are sleeping in the bathroom. The bath hallway was maybe 4 feet wide, dark, and crowded with closets and drawers. The living room had only about 3 feet of walkable space on ALL four sides of a couch that takes up most of room. The balcony jacuzzi and mini bar situation is silly. Not usable unless you order ahead. While some of the employeess were very friendly the majority seemed more focused on their tasks and duties than in wanting to meet or exceed guest expectations. (We encountered very few employees that were bilingual which may be a result of staffing challenges given the hotels remote location) The one exception was the main restaurant where breakfast lunch and dinner is served. The food there was good and worthy of a four star hotel. Most of the staff there were terrific. It was interesting to us a that the same manager was constantly present in this restaurant and seemed to have an eye for detail and a good rapport with the staff. It was the only part of the hotel that seemed to have any management presence. The lack of luxury service training was pretty evident everywhere else. We left disappointed in the entire experience.
