We stayed for one night and, unfortunately, the experience did not reflect the high price paid or the standards expected of a Mercure-branded hotel. On arrival, the check-in process was unnecessarily lengthy and involved excessive data collection. We were also asked to authorise a £50 security deposit at reception, which had not been clearly communicated at the time of booking. We were initially allocated the wrong room (a twin instead of a king), which required contacting reception to resolve. To be fair, the receptionist handled this well and was polite, apologetic, and efficient in correcting the issue. However, the replacement room presented further problems. The toilet seat was broken on arrival. This was reported immediately, but no one attended to repair it, and there was no follow-up or communication from management. I ultimately had to resolve this myself. The room was located on the top floor with no lift access, which had not been disclosed in advance. Sleep quality was particularly poor. The room is advertised as soundproofed, but this was not the case. There was visible light coming through gaps around the door frame from the corridor, and noise travelled easily due to hard flooring on the upper level. Throughout the night we experienced disturbance from doors closing, people walking, luggage being moved, and conversations from neighbouring rooms. In addition, the air conditioning unit was very noisy, even when set to “silent” mode, and would intermittently activate and hum despite being turned off. The control panel also emitted a constant light with no timeout function, which reflected off the wall and effectively left a light on in the room overnight. As a result, we did not get a proper night’s sleep. The restaurant experience was also below expectations. Service appeared unpolished, and the area we were seated in had visible wall damage. Breakfast highlighted further issues. Only polystyrene cups were available initially, and when we requested proper cups, these were taken from another table rather than provided clean. The coffee machine was not well maintained, and there was no hot milk available without requesting it separately. Other guests appeared to experience similar issues. Overall, the hotel gives the impression that it is struggling operationally, with a lack of attention to maintenance, housekeeping, and service standards. While the reception and bar areas are well presented, other areas show clear signs of wear. For clarity, I have retained photographic and video evidence to support the issues outlined above. For the price paid, this felt closer to a budget hotel experience rather than the level expected from this brand.
