I have stayed recently at the Novotel London Excel twice in the past month. It is a very modern, stylish hotel overlooking the Poplar Dock in London's Canning Town. The hotel's staff is young and ethnically diverse, very similar to the clientele. Dinners are good at the hotel's "Upper Deck" restaurant (and not too expensive for London. The breakfasts are especially good - the hotel has a large, airy, light breakfast room overlooking the dock. One side of the buffet is continental breakfasts (cold meats, cheese, croissants, pains au chocolat etc.) and the other is for English breakfasts. So the choice for breakfast is particularly good (though it should be at £18.10 per breakfast). Novotel London Excel also has a very good, enclosed car park (£18 per day), which is very reasonable for London. The staff are the best aspect of this hotel - I would particularly mention the excellent service given at breakfast by Asif, at dinner by Sora, on the reception by Lesley and also Shay, the latter of whom helped me very patiently with an item of lost property which was found. This hotel is not the cheapest (but a similar hotel in the West End would cost the earth), but for a variety of travellers, holidaymakers, businesspeople and families it is a very good option.

Baby cot was dangerous

Stay was ok but struggled with the baby cot twice it was broken and made it really uncomfortable to sleep with a toddler

Having used their advance book-in facility it was disappointing to find upon arrival that we had to wait 10 minutes to check-in. Then, for even more delay, the Receptionist couldn't find our booking. Eventually I was given to key cards which, upon arrival at our room, failed to work. Return to reception to find that the cards had not been activated apologies, just replacement, activated, cards. For a system which is advertised as removing all the time and hassle from checking-in, this level of service is rubbish. They will no doubt claim this was due to new staff of something similar but there were plenty of staff around (including the Manager) and, quite simply, nobody appeared interested in providing good service. As for the hotel facilities, room was quite small with only a small window and the in-house telephone system doesn't work. Won't be using again.

Simple overview .. Room okay, small Bathroom and toilet separate so you have to come out the tiniest darkest toilet in the world and walk around the corner and then into the bathroom to wash your hands. Not the end of the world if staying one night though. Bar however, is nice but had one member of staff on bar who was clearly stressed. Another member of staff came to ask him to do drinks to go with pizza but He got a) confused with request and b) then banged his head on the till and verbally complaining to everyone at the bar that he’d been on a 12 hour shift, just him. He worked really slowly and never looked at customers or engaged with them or said thank you so took over 15 minutes to get evening drinks to take to room and felt very awkward ( being kind ) so this is either a fault of the hotel for him being there or He is always like this I don’t know but I’m any event I had my ten year old Son with me, Dad and Son going to the bar to get drinks time and He spoilt that as my Son looked at him in amazement of how someone could be so rude. I said to couple next to me as we were looking at each other with raised eyebrows, crown plaza opposite next time then, more expensive but now seems way worth it. Needs fixing guys.

Having used the pre-check in facility which is advertised as simply pick up your key on arrival, it was disappointing to have to wait almost 10 minutes to be received by the receptionist who then couldn't locate my booking on the system. Eventually the receptionist, having found my booking, gave me a key only to find, upon arrival at my room (4th. Floor), that the key hadn't been properly activated and consequently, did not function. Having returned back to reception the key was simply 're-activated' and handed back to me without even the most basic apology.
