The hotel itself is lovely, if you like the old style buildings. The bathrooms could do with updating a bit, the toilet flush handle is falling off, for example. Downsides: location is far out, we had to walk around 20-25 minutes to get to the closest bus stop, otherwise it's a 20 minute taxi ride from the nearest station (which is fine but we struggled to get a taxi at one point with a 90 min wait - Not the hotels fault of course!). Bar prices are on par with central London, costing over £11 for 2 beers or £7 for 2 small lemonades, absolutely crazy.

I was very concerned with the lack of covid prevention in the bar & at breakfast in the restaurant. All guests touching the buffet breakfast. No staff wearing masks either.

We were really excited to have a night away as we are parents to 3 young children so was more about the sleep for us. The room was that hot that we could not sleep at all. There was no air con. The curtains had been left open and the windows closed on a red hot day therefore the room was like a sauna Not an enjoyable experience at all.

I was relocated here because of failings in the hotel I had been recommended and I can say without a shadow of a doubt this was by far the superior hotel. Whilst the hotel decor is tired in places, everything else is first class. The staff were welcoming and friendly from the start and could not do more to help. The restaurant was equally as pleasing. The chicken dish I had was probably the best I had tasted in the world, well done! I would certainly recommend this hotel.

We were at the Grange Park for 2 nights this week - having been there many, many times. We even had our wedding reception there over 30 years ago and have stayed there with our 3 children throughout the years. Now its just the 2 of us travelling and although we are still very happy there, there are some easily fixable faults. For example, on our last 2 visits we have stayed in rooms 10 and 11 which are described as a suite - they have a bedroom separate form the lounge area. The furniture and layout of the rooms make us think that whoever designed them has never actually stayed in the room. The wardrobe is an open hanging space with 6 hangers behind the mirror and there are no drawers - not even one - anywhere - so absolutely nowhere to put your smaller clothes and you have to keep them in your suitcase. And one thing that annoys us about hotel bathrooms is the lack of space to put your toiletries bags. These rooms have one small shelf - which is better than some hotels, I admit - but there I had to put my bags on the floor. But the worst thing about this bathroom is actually turning on the shower...... in order to do so you actually have to be standing in the bathtub - and the water starts off very cold. So you effectively have a cold shower while you wait for the water to warm up. There is no choice - the shower screen is fixed in place and no one's arms are long enough to reach round to put the taps on. And as the shower head is in a fixed position, you cannot turn it away from you to avoid the cold deluge. And in room 10, the shower head is actually fixed in a position where its pointing out of the bath slightly - so there is no option other than to soak the bathroom floor. And if I were you, I'd make sure that the first housekeeping task every morning would be to sweep up the cigarette ends outside the reception rooms by the doors down to the lawns - it does not make it look as though you're taking pride in the place. But there are many things right about the Grange Park. The staff are friendly and work hard. The breakfast is well organised and lovely. And the position is perfect for us and our visits. So I'm sure we'll see you again soon.

Disappointing experience

Travelling with 15 year old daughter. Mercure only has children rated as up to 11 years so I had to class her as an adult. Choosing a family room I anticipated a single bed. Unfortunately there was only a pull out bed. Luckily or unluckily, there was a corridor next to the bathroom so we pulled the bed in the small annex as this offers my daughter some privacy. Had to wait ages for this to be made up as they assumed from the booking that we were 2 adults even though I had specified a family room. Not ideal due to the noise of flushing the loo etc and it was cold. In addition, the sink was blocked. This was seemingly fixed but then a leak appeared so water started to spread over the floor when the taps were on. Someone came to the room to check and used a towel to block it as there was no plumber on site that day. We had to ask for xtra towels due to mopping up the water. I asked for a discount which they obliged me with. BUT Mercure should change their child policy to include children up to 15 or 16 years of age. Hotel is dated in decor and furnishings. There was a hole in the plaster in the bedroom, there are no drawers. The only positive was the double bed was comfy. Breakfast needs overhauling to include some offers of fresh cooking e.g. omelette etc. Greasy eggs, bacon, sausages. Would be nice to have fresh ground coffee, not drawn from a machine.

Stayed hear a few times over the last few years and once again not disappointed. Reception staff very welcoming, dinner and breakfast excellent, perfect location and staff all very professional and pleasant, rooms in need of a refurbishment but perfect for a 2 night stay and the price. We got a 2night stay with dinner on first night and breakfast on both mornings for 160 excellent value. Already planning our next visit.

During my stay the wind and rain were more or less incessant. The hotel offered a place to get dry, though it was not especially warm during a couple of cold days in August. Although the hotel appears to be close to a major road, there is no problem with noise. Several large supermarkets are within walking distance, but it's quite a distance to a place with a selection of restaurants. The bar was fine, the restaurant good (but with limited choices). Breakfast was served cold in a bag. I did not go for a stroll around the hotel grounds. No doubt the experience would have been very different if the weather had been more pleasant.

We are now serving breakfast in our restaurant and it is an At Seat concept with the continental selection served from a trolley and the cooked served plated both to guests tables.
