Good hotel

Customer review rating 4.5/5

Bit tricky to find but worth it; we were well looked after eg re wife's 'Blue Badge' need for parking. The decorations are impressive eg in the block at back of car park. Bar service excellent thanks and a good breakfast (except for fried eggs needing replacement...) Thanks all. Alan B.

Shabby, noisy original room, musty second bedroom, dreadful cold breakfast.

I was allocated a very noisy room next to a large extractor fan. The second room I was given on the ground floor was musty/damp smelling. The breakfast was truly awful, Luke warm food and cold coffee from a 'flask', the worst I have ever had.

No car parking

I usually stay here because there is a car park, but since the last time I stayed you've built an Annex meaning that there are maybe half a dozen spaces available. I was told on arrival that the one space free was booked but that spaces were first come first served, which is conradictory. Way over priced; unlikely I'll ever stay again.

Tiny car park

I usually stay here because its one of the few hotels in Oxford that has a car park, However they neglected to tell me that since my last stay they have built an Annex so that there is space for maybe 6 cars only now. Upon arrival I was told that spaces were first come first served, then told that the one space free was booked. Upon leaving I had to wait maybe 15 mins for a staff member to move theri car that was blocking me Unlikely I'll ever stay again.

Dear TimG8420Zo Thank you for your review regarding your recent stay. Unfortunately we did not have the extended car park since June 2019, apologies if this was not communicated to you. Current policy is that we will only reserve spaced for Blue badge holders. Again I apologise for the inconvenience and it is my hope to better serve you in the near future. Kind Regards Bradlee Pillay

Caring and concerned staff

I created a problem by not advising the constraints my wife and I faced because of her Alzheimer's and her mobility issues. This issue was most courteously resolved by a room change which allowed us to really enjoy our stay. As on previous visits we enjoyed the food in the restaurant and, again, the staff were exemplary.

OK but no parking

Parking was a problem, not only because there were few places but also because they were poorly managed. Corridors are extremely narrow, bath small with little place for toiletries. Good rooms, decent breakfast.

Adequate

Hotel chosen purely for its proximity to a college event. Room basic. Room service food cold. Tray left outside the door once we finished and stayed there - it was still there 15 hours later as it hadn’t been collected. The staircase and corridor in the 7th floor smelled of damp. On the plus side we were able to bring a group of friends back to sit in the lobby bar and socialise until late.

Disappointing experience

A property in desperate need of renovation. The "upgraded" room left you wondering what the standard room was like. The corridor between reception and the bar smelled like a farmyard and reception is held together with tape - literally.

Very nice stay.

Just one night and we were in the new block in 1002. Quiet and comfortable. Easy walk to city centre. Breakfast fine. Altogether a place I can reconmend.

We had a 2 night stay in Oxford. On arrival we were unable to park in the car park as it was full, however we were assisted with our luggage and directed to a nearby city car park. Our stay included breakfast and evening meal. The breakfast was plentiful a with many choices, the evening menu although limited was delivered to a high standard.

Dissapointed

Regularly stay at Mercure and past experience has been good but a noisy ventilation system that was not dealt with resulted in this trip being unpleasant. Reported on checking in the first night and was later told the issue had been resolved. Returned in the evening to find they had just turned the system off. |Reported the next morning again and asked to be moved if not repaired only to return after a function to find nothing had been done. I had been back to the hotel at 13h00 to change and had to get my access card reprogrammed and nothing was said at that stage.

Decent quality hotel. Really nice shower. Some of the facilities in the room were a bit hard to use, e.g. the curtains didn't move very freely. Some of the signage is a bit poor, e.g. finding your way in initially if arriving from the High St, and figuring out how the bar works late in the evening.

Great location. Needs some TLC in places. Breakfast average.

Great location and was therefore a reasonable price. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss. Croissants were excellent but not much of a range was available otherwise and it wasn’t replenished well. Hotel generally needs some TLC. Rooms and hallways are tired. Our room was also very dusty. Toiletries replenished on day 2 but dirty cups & glasses left. Beds not made either. Overall it was the location that made it for us and the room was spacious.

Friendly atmosphere, particularly pleasant common space.

My request for separate beds (as I was travelling with my adult son) was lost in the shuffle though the hotel had replied to my reminder that the bedroom was being prepared according to my wishes. My daughter and husband had separate beds but had arrived a day before so changing with them would have been a hassle. (Their name is different so this couldn't have been a question of confusion.). The odor of mildew in the hallway leading to the rooms on the parking lot was a shock particularly as I have had an allergic reaction to it. Fortunately our bedroom 401 didn't seem to be affected.

Great location, good breakfast

Always stay here. Very convenient, friendly, nice hotel. No complaints, really. A couple of observations: the room was very hot, so we opened all the windows. Noticed that all the window frames were rotten and badly in need of replacement.

Stayed here for one night with a friend following a trip to the theatre. Check in process was smooth and room was lovely, particularly the bathroom. My friend is a coeliac and the breakfast was still accessible with gluten free bread on request and the items all served separately. Unknown to us, the students and residents were celebrating May morning at 6am. The windows didn’t drown out the noise of the parade and drum banging but I don’t think they would have in any hotel! Would return.

We stayed in room 306. The main surfaces were clean but window ledges had flies on them and dusty. Maybe the room had not been used for some time and only key areas recently cleaned. Top of safe dusty too. Shame as a nice room. Also hallway outside room 306 had a strong smell of toilets. Not nice.

Before arrival I emailed a request. I never received a response. On arrival I mentioned the email. No apology. I asked if we could have Prosecco for our wine in the room. Was reassured this would be fine. We left our bag in reception as it was too early to check in. When we returned, we checked in and was given a voucher for wine. Not Prosecco in the room. Surely the receptionist would have known the policy before telling us we could have Prosecco? The room was very small. Only one window opened as others were painted shut and there were dead flies on the window sill. The room was not cleaned thoroughly. When collecting wine, we were given the bottle in the bar without a cooler. The worst Childrens size glasses for the wine and no polite service from the bar. We had to ask for larger glasses. Both odd and staff seemed put out by our request. We then sat in the restaurant for dinner and again no polite pouring of wine or attention from the staff. They had lost my reservation and clearly didn’t know what was going on. We ordered pizzas, both were not as described, not containing the ingredients on the menu. No chillis or goats cheese etc…. very poor service and meal. We returned much later for a cocktail and that was the worst we have ever had. The only redeeming quality that night was that the bed was comfortable. The following morning we had breakfast as this was included in the booking. Worst breakfast we have ever had in a hotel. The orange juice was not drinkable. The hot water and coffee in self service canister which was cold. Not coffee machine. No granola for the yogurt but the yogurt was also grainy and awful. Stale pastries. Thankfully the toast and butter was ok as I would have gone without breakfast as I’m vegetarian. Overall the location was ok, bed was comfortable but without parking and due to the poor service and dirty room I would not ever return or recommend this hotel or restaurant.

Great location, great breakfast. I asked for a room with a bath, this was not possible. I asked for a room far away from the lift and I was very close to the lift. The room was for a disabled person so the wash basin was at thigh level which made it very difficult to wash my face. The overhead shower was very poor pressure and the shower on the handrail did not come up high enough for me to be able to wash my hair! Not a very well thought out allocation! Otherwise, the room itself was fine.

Dear SapphireG Please accept my apology for the issue experienced during your stay. I will addressed your feedback with all relevant departments. Please note that we have taken your feedback on board and it it my hope to better serve you in the near future. Kind Regards Bradlee Pillay
