Although conveniently located the hotel decor was tired and dated. I was allocated a tiny room with a window that was fixed shut. There were cobwebs around the window frame and the en-suite shower smelled when the light/fan were switched off. I complained and was offered a more expensive room and there was quite a bit of negotiating going on about the price. My daughter rang in and as a result they did not charge extra for the first of three nights spent in the more expensive room - it was a bit of a hassle and I feel I should not have been charged extra at all. Although my new room was in the annexe I was not happy with the standard of cleaning - I had a bath and when I reclined I could see black gunge on the underside of the mechanism that you twist to open/shut the plughole. The non slip mat also had black gunge trapped between the suckers. The table lamp metal shades were very dusty and the furnishings were worn, dingy and dated. Also the route back into the Hotel via the rear car parking area was very mucky and untidy - the door into the main building was in need of attention and did not create a good impression. Breakfast on the first morning was mayhem as there was only one member of staff on duty and everyone was milling around trying to find things. The coffee was awful and mostly luke warm. Most people expect good coffee when they go to a hotel. One member of staff was insufficient to deal with everything and I was also made to pay on the spot although we had arranged for our breakfasts to be added to our room bills. This was awkward because we were attending an academic conference and my one payment made claiming back from our University a bit more complicated. On the whole the staff were nice and tried to be helpful but there were some language barriers. Even though we paid a reduced price for the breakfast I did not think it was good value.

The location is ideal and central. Disappointed no bar/meals other than breakfast. Room stiflingly hot and unable to turn heat down-small fan unable to cool room sufficiently.

I was very happy to arrive to the hotel and to be greeted by warm staff and offered help with my baggage due to no lift in my section of the building. The breakfast spread was great value and again, staff were really warm and helpful, the space was clean and a great offering of food. My room left several things to be desired. I was at the end of a hallway, but next to a storage room, so staff went in and out several times as needed throughout my stay. The door viewing hole didn't had a cover, so as a single woman travelling alone, the combination of people walking by and the lights being triggered (one time without the storage door being opened, but I could see a shadow outside my door - it was really alarming and made that night's sleep really restless) made me uncomfortable several times. On my last night, someone knocked on my door, when I answered they said "oh I'll just come back" and by the time I got to the door, they were already around the corner - I called out to say hello, are you housekeeping or something, and he replied maintenance, but as he was gone so quickly, I couldn't confirm it. This was at around 6pm, and I hadn't reported anything broken or not working, so I was really rattled by it - again, as a single woman staying alone, and then unable to cover the viewing hole in the door, I barely slept the final night. In retrospect, I should have rang down to the front desk or walked down to ask about this, but it was such an unsettling experience, and I was soon heading out for an evening work function, that I didn't have time to ask properly. Finally, the building itself is very loud - I could hear toilet flushes and showers, my neighbor going in and out of his closet, and just a lot of traffic, even being tucked away in the corner of the hotel. I didn't sleep well at all, and since this was work travel, it made my conference and meetings much more difficult without proper rest. I appreciate that the building is quite old so there's likely not too much that can be done without a lot of work and hassle, but please do consider this, given the price point and location to regularly used academic buildings.

It was a nice room and the breakfast was excellent. The shower drain never worked properly, but otherwise, no complaints.
