Nice hotel, a few small issues

Customer review rating 3.5/5

Guym Couples - 21/10/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

A nice hotel in a good location for our first stay in Oxford. A few issues, toilet was continually streaming water from the cistern until we were shown how to wiggle the buttons. Hot water ran out on both mornings we stayed. Breakfast was good quality but luke warm. It would have been nice to know we had booked in on the day of the Oxford 1/2 marathon before we tried to drive in! Overall, a solid 7/10 let down by these issues especially after paying £50 for an upgraded room.

Amazing!

Two night stay over because I was running the Oxford Half Marathon. Hotel was fantastic with a first class room and great staff.

Will return again.

Lovely hotel, well situated, very clean, good food, very friendly, helpful professional staff-reception and dining. One low mark for the evening receptionist who although very nice was having an extremely loud private conversation at reception with exrenely loud laughter while diners were eating. Not professional.

Location, room, food, staff - all great

Just excellent. Great helpful staff and excellent food. Very comfortable room and unbeatable location. Thanks you I had a great time.

Excellent position in the heart of Oxford itself

The hotel was ideally placed closed to Merton college where our daughter was due to metriculate as part of Oxford University but is ideally placed also close to all colleges and the main shops of Oxford. The staff at the hotel were excellent and friendly and answered all queries. Hotel parking is tight and is on a first come first served basis. The bedroom we had on the top floor was comfortable and clean. Would be our hotel of first choice when we come back to Oxford.

Very poor

Terrible room - single female traveller expected to cross dark unlit car park to stay in an annexe for which the door was completely open and consequently accessible to the public as it is not necessary to go through the main hotel to reach it. Coming back to the hotel after dinner in College necessitated also going through the unlit alley to even reach the unlit car park. It felt unsafe and inappropriate. I have stayed at the hotel many times before and the annexe is clearly new, so I won’t be staying with Mercure again as it should go without saying that guests wish to feel safe.

Comfortable well decorated rooms

One night was enjoyable as the room was wonderful. Breakfast was good despite the temporary dinning area whilst the main one is being refurbished. Well located off the main street.

Overpriced for what it is, but a good location

Shabby room and not a particularly comfortable bed with a basic tea/coffee tray - not even a biscuit! But the hotel had very friendly and helpful reception staff who were factastic.

Disappointing

Although the hotel is in a good location, the overall experience was disappointing. The hotel interior is tired and could certainly benefit from refurbishment. The room was no more adequate than that of a Travelodge. The facilities in the room were minimal and some elements were not working. It was difficult to have a good nights rest as there appeared to be no soundproofing at all. However, the staff were very pleasant and helpful.

Incredibly hot and incredibly unhelpful reception team

We had a dreadful stay at the Mercure. So much that we both agreed we wouldn’t stay again even if it was free. From the moment we checked in until the moment we left, it was almost laughable. We were travelling with a baby and multiple large suitcases as we had been in the UK for six weeks… access into the hotel is impossible. No one offered to help with the luggage, so I had to make three trips up and down to get our bags to the room whilst carrying a baby. No parking was available so my mum had to park at least 15 minutes walk away and is not very mobile due to a serious fall. The rooms were uncomfortably hot with broken air con and we only had one shower gel and one conditioner/ shampoo for two nights between us. The beds were made up in the wrong configuration. It was just a really bad and uncomfortable stay. Would never stay again. Worst Accor group hotel I have visited.

Lovely room and the Hotel was well located

In general we were very pleased with the Hotel, room and breakfast. However did not find it acceptable that neither coffee or bar snacks were available in the bar. The reason given that they were doing work in bar kitchen. Still not acceptable and let’s the rest of Hotel experience down.

Well located, good stay.

It was an overall good. Was disappointed that the room wasn’t cleaned and the cooked breakfast wasn’t hot enough.

Returned to hotel at 10.30 to freshen up and do a few thisngs after outside breakfast/meeting. Found my door wide open and staff member changing sheets, towels etc. Pointed out I had not yet checked out but no interest. Raised the matter at reception - and about security risk that an unknwn person was able to pick up bag in room. Reception said I could use lobby rest room. Gobsmacked by this attitude. Never in 50 years of international travel have I been treated this way..

Good afternoon davidL631EV My sincerest apologies that you had this experience as this is not the type of service we wish to provide to our guests. Please may you let me know your details so that I can investigate this further with our team. Kindly email us directly on h6668-rd@accor.com and we will get back in touch with you. The hotel is in a very convenient part of town with easy walking distance to shops quirky inns and restaurants and theatre. The decor in the hotel is also very nice. The girls in reception are helpful and friendly. The aspects which need improving are the bedding and the pillows - and the standard of attention to details is lacking in certain areas. We stayed in the suite which is £300 per night. This was in no way value for money. Pillows were no better than a budget hotel - I had three nights on them and there was nothing luxurious or worth £300 a night about the bed and there was dust all over the top of the headboard. Plus there was no electric cable for the tv in the lounge area. For the price these are all small details which should not be a problem to the guest . After chatting to the manager he sorted the issues . We then found that housekeeping decided to add to the bathroom extra toiletries such as flannels - combs for our final night..( could have done with the flannels from day one ) When ordering a pot of tea for the room we didn’t drink it because the water in the tea was awful - not fresh and tasted stale - not freshly boiled - and possibly from the urns in the dining room. Breakfast isn’t really worth the money - self service with little choice and hot water from urns …. The manager sent a bottle of Prosecco to our room based on the issues we had with the dust and no tv in lounge on the first night ( whole point of having the extra room was to sit in it in the evening if back early to watch the tv ) rather than go to bed early which is what we ended up having to do. So overall the suite at £300 per night was in no way value for money ! Also I booked the hotel based on it having car parking - this is not a reliable facility- we were lucky the second day to get a space ( only ten on site) but on arrival had to go off up the road to public car park which came as a total surprise when we expected on site parking. Overall we might choose to stay again but would not include the breakfast or book a high priced room as these things do not seem value for money at this hotel.

Excellent location.

We enjoyed our two-night stay in Oxford at the Mercury Eastgate. The staff were all helpful and the room clean and spacious.

Well located, friendly staff always tgere to help. Car parking arrangements good and car moved on day of departure to be able not be blocked.

Breakfasts and dinner food excellent. Attentive staff especially Placido and ALL the girls on reception. Moved us to floor 2 room 203 as stairs were difficult for my wife. Room perfect but suggest some drawers needed. Even during alterations to restaurant it went smoothly. Our early booking of £15 was cancelled as the room was not ready but we went out into Oxford until it was. Our move the next day went well.

I had 15 nights at this wonderful comfortable hotel with a perfect Oxford location. My room was exceptional and the staff friendly and always prepared to put in the extra mile. The meals were excellent. The reading lounge was lovely after a day exploring. I cannot fault this hotel or it’s staff.

Dear bquirky2021 Than you for your Exceptional review on TripAdvisor. Glad to hear that you had a great long stay with us. I will share your positive feedback with all team members. We really hope to see you again in the near future. Kind regards Bradlee Pillay

First visited in 1973 it was our intention to recall times past. The exterior was just as I recalled it! Our room was excellent and the bathroom spacious and well lit with plenty of space for storing necessities. Bed comfortable and linen crisp. The initial arrival was disappointing though. Our recollection from all those years ago was of a huge car park through the arch, today however that car park is down to 8 or 9 cars and arriving in the pouring rain to find that there was no car parking available was so disappointing. The staff were very helpful and cheerful so you couldn't stay cross for long!

Generally good but noisy guests

graemehall233 21/09/2021 TripAdvisor review

Generally a good hotel for its price point, and certainly very well located. Unfortunately my stay was spoilt by very loud noisy guests drinking and shouting outside beneath the window to my room until at least 2am. Not directly the hotel's fault perhaps, but I feel that the hotel could perhaps police this sort of behaviour better

Dear graemehall233 Thank you for your review, Please accept my apologies for the noise created by other guests, I will pass on your feedback to the nights team, to be more visual in identified these types of issues. I again apologise for this experience and we hope to better serve you in the near future. Kind regards Bradlee Pillay
