Very disappointing compared to previous stays. Repairs needed in room which was a junior suite, hotel bar lacking in basic drinks, choices at breakfast not usual ones just basic.

Excellent , as always !

This is our 3rd visit to St pauls mercure. We used spa facilities and enjoyed a treatment. Lovely spacious hotel room. Beautiful freshly cooked breakfast. Only thing we felt let down by was the pre booked afternoon tea...the waitress couldn't find our booking, took a while to be served, disappointed at what we were presented with, 3 finger sandwiches only on white bread consisting of cheese and pickle! No variation. Hot overcooked scones that just crumbled when cut. Unable to find waitress to mention this and no one came and asked how our food was or if we would like a drink!

Enjoyable but could be improved

Communication from the hotel prior to the stay was poor. I phoned several times to book a table for dinner that was included in the package but no one ever answered the phone. I emailed and didn’t get a response. I also upgraded the room and received no confirmation. When we arrived check in was efficient. The first privilege room we had was large but the air conditioning was clearly broken (controls hanging off the wall) and was allocated another, smaller but with working air con, although missing bathrobes. The room was adequate and clean but the finish isn’t up to 4* standard. It looked tired and ready for a refurbishment - chipped furniture and scuffed walls. Dinner was nice but service a bit lacking. There seemed few experienced staff but we understand there are staffing problems with the pandemic. The manager was friendly but clearly knew his audience- if you weren’t a table of women he could joke with and charm, he showed little interest in you. We were a family, so no charm points to be won there! The food was very nice and we didn’t wait long. My husband used the pool and said it was nice but signage confusing. Check out was efficient We liked the location, cleanliness and restaurant but the rooms need updating

Disappointed visit

The staff appeared disjointed and not as smartly dressed and sharp as previous visits. None of the staff appeared rude but on check in information didn’t appear to flow. We had to ask about breakfast and spa etc. The room was adequate but the bed appeared small. The overall dissatisfaction was that the hotel was freezing. I mean never have I been in a hotel where the bar area and reception was freezing. You couldn’t take your coat off, On the evening this didn’t make you want to sit in area the bar area to have drinks. I informed bar staff who agreed it was always cold. I even questioned this at the reception staff and again on check out who agreed and put it down to the time of year. Needless to say we didn’t waste any more time in the bar and definitely did not invite us to have a meal. In the swimming pool area and pool this was also the same. It wasn’t as relaxing as expected. I feel awful as this hotel in the past has always been our first point of call etc, however when we spoke to the staff it was as though ‘ ah well, shoulders shrugged up etc attitude’. As a family group and having a baby with us we didn’t want to be going out around town, but the unwelcome and room temperatures didn’t give us the choice. The trip was about attending a family funeral in Sheffield, and wanting to relax time out in the hotel. So dissatisfied, feel sad for saying the truth.

Friendly staff. Good pool. Good value for two rooms. But… Lumpy pillows. Tired decor. Freezing cold restaurant for breakfast. Didn’t feel like a high end hotel.

My first time in a Mercure Hotel. The St. Paul's couldn't be better located, right in the heart of Sheffield a stone's throw from almost everything (Crucible, Lyceum, art galleries, restaurants, pubs, etc.). I can't fault the hotel, the staff are friendly and helpful, the rooms, particularly the bathrooms, are great. Nothing to criticise except for one thing, and that's the prices at the lobby bar. Apart from that, our whole party gave it a big thumbs up.

Booking platform along with personal booking service worked well. Bedrooms and bathrooms really good, clean, fresh. Still suffers from over cooked English breakfasts I guess because of warming lights continue to cook.

Roomy and tidy, nice pool, central location

Xmas stay while Visiting relatives. Stayed room-only, enjoyed the large bathroom and spacious double room. Great value. Super central location to Sheffield city centre venues. Guests with cars, should price up their city centre car park options beforehand as the rates can vary widely. But the room rate was such good value that the £19.50 very-local, very-secure Q-park, above the Genting casino nearby was not an issue. We used the swimming pool. With a calm ambiance, and warm lap pool with sauna and steam room. locker keys and towels were provided. Can’t comment on the restaurant, bar or breakfast as we did not use them. Our room was clean, but did have to chase up missing items amenities on a daily basis by calling reception each evening, who remedied each time within 5 minutes. Another recommendation for car drivers. Use google maps to work out your route in-out (not your basic satnav) as Sheffield city regularly close-off roads for events (fun fair, Christmas markets, covid street space, large construction projects) . All these resulted in making 3 failed-loops trapped by the Xmas market and a construction zone, on our arrival day., so parked and walked 10minutes, arriving 45 minutes later. The used Google maps the following days successfully, as they knew the road closures.

We were visiting our daughter which we do on a monthly basis. For a change we decided to comeback to St Pauls. I still haven’t forgiven you for deducting thousands in the Accor points from the system while I was suffering illness. The room was fine and very clean although we did have some issues regarding amenities in the room. Where was the dawn simulator? The remote control for the TV didn’t operate the TV. I had to call to have robes for our second night of our stay. Many years ago, I asked Roco Forte was makes a good hotel great and he replied Attention to Detail is the key.

Very badly organised

3hrs late to check us in… No availability to dine in the restaurant despite calling the day prior and enquiring.. I was told I didn’t have to book I could just turn up… Unable to make cocktails due to limited staff… No cot in the room despite pre booking one… £50 charged to my room without my knowledge, incase I wanted additional extras which I did not.. Staff were unable to advise pool times for children even though they worked in the spa… The occasion was a family wedding and some guests rooms had been given away. Unable to pay in cash as the hotel did not have any change. overall a disappointment.

Disappointing Christmas stay

TripAdvisor rating 2.0/5

13nigelh 30/12/2021 TripAdvisor review

We had booked a 3 night stay at this hotel from Xmas Eve onwards, as we had stayed previous years on Xmas Eve only, and wished we had stayed Xmas Day as well, because the hotel was always decorated so beautifully (particularly in the lobby and restaurant areas) and there was a real festive atmosphere in the hotel. Unfortunately, this year the hotel had decided not to do very much at all which was really disappointing. There were no special decorations in the lobby on Xmas Day, just a Christmas tree, the grand piano was not playing xmas music, and the restaurant was only partially decorated. In fact, the hotel did not feel very festive at all. The Christmas lunch we had, statrted off well enough, but as soon as the morning staff knocked and the bigger groups turned up, we were forgotten. We had to wait an hour for our dessert and then another hour for the cheeseboard, which the waiting staff and the mananger denied was included on the Chjristmas menu. I had to show the manager the Christmas menu on my phone so that he could see cheese and biscuits were included in the xmas menu. It says something about how poorly the kitchen and restaurant are managed if neither the chef nor the restaurant manager know what is on the menu that is being served to their guests. Apart from Boxing Day lunch which was good and service good, the overall "restaurant" experience was poor. Even at breakfast, some items on the "hot" buffet were lukewarm at best, and we had to tell the waitress to tell the chef that she might like to temperature check the hot food display. We used to love this hotel and have had some lovely stays here, but since our last visit two years ago, it would seem that service particularly in the restaurant has deteriorated, and the hotel has lost interest in making a Christmas stay magical for their guests. I appreciate it has been a tough couple of years for hospitality, having worked previously in hospitaly myself, but there is no excuse for not getting the basics right, and that is where this hotel failed so drastically over xmas. We spent a lot of money on our our 3 night stay, also we had pre-ordered our xmas day and boxing day lunch choices, and at the end of the day, we wish we hadn't wasted our money on such a disappointing experience.
