Unsafe and Hostile Hotel Experience

TripAdvisor rating 1.0/5

967charleanm TripAdvisor review

I am writing to share my deeply disappointing and distressing experience at this hotel. What happened was not only unprofessional and unsafe but left me genuinely frightened and vulnerable, and the way the hotel has handled it since demonstrates a total lack of accountability or care. At check-in, my companion and I explicitly asked whether both passports were required. We were told only one passport was needed, and the staff accepted my companion’s passport, even though I was the paying guest. This procedure, directed by hotel staff, later became the reason I was denied access to the room. That night, when I returned to the hotel, I was unable to enter because only one key had been issued and my companion was asleep upstairs. Despite calmly explaining the situation, showing a photo of my companion’s passport, and repeatedly requesting verification through the hotel system or security cameras, I was refused assistance. I was extremely tired and needed to rest, yet staff chose to escalate rather than help. I sat to the side quietly, attempting to call my companion while waiting. A staff member repeatedly approached me, sat directly opposite, stared at me, and questioned me aggressively. He accused me of coming to the wrong hotel and of being drunk. I explained the situation calmly and continued trying to contact my friend. He left, returned again with the same accusations, and then called security. The security guard stood beside me in a physically intimidating manner, repeatedly telling me that I “must leave” because security had decided so. I was pressured continuously over a prolonged period, despite being a calm, exhausted, paying guest. The intimidation continued until I felt I had no choice but to leave the hotel entirely. Before leaving, I was so exhausted and disoriented that I did not know if I could safely drink or access water. I purchased a drink, only to later realize it was sold to me at a higher price than advertised a distressing additional layer of vulnerability. Being forced out of the hotel late at night in an unfamiliar city left me extremely exposed. I had no choice but to wait for a taxi outside, during which I was robbed and threatened by homeless individuals who openly frequent the area around the hotel. The hotel is marketed as being in a safe environment, yet guests are left unprotected when staff choose to remove them without assistance. I was alone, dressed for a night out, extremely distressed, and highly vulnerable. Due to back-to-back professional commitments, I could not immediately address the situation. When I did attempt to do so, the hotel continued to dismiss my concerns. I have had to sit in the lobby for over 30 minutes while the manager refused to speak to me directly, communicating only through staff. Instead of acknowledging the severity of the incident or apologizing, the manager asked what I “wanted as an outcome,” without first recognising the harm caused or accepting responsibility. This hotel’s actions represent a serious failure of duty of care, breach of contract, and disregard for guest safety, under French law and basic professional standards. Staff intimidation, coercion, and management avoidance compounded the trauma of the night. Any paying guest could face similar treatment, being accused, intimidated, and expelled at any time, in an unsafe environment. I strongly caution anyone considering staying at this hotel. The staff’s behavior, combined with management’s refusal to take responsibility, creates an unsafe and hostile atmosphere. This was not a minor inconvenience it was a threatening, exhausting, and unsafe experience that could have had far worse consequences. Security footage and records will clearly reflect the sequence of events and the hotel’s repeated failure to act responsibly. In summary, the hotel: Denied a paying guest access despite proof of booking Intimidated and coerced a guest through staff and security Forced a vulnerable guest into unsafe conditions Refused to acknowledge fault, apologize, or take remedial action Created an unsafe environment despite claiming to operate in a safe area I hope this review reaches prospective guests and the management team, as it accurately reflects the unsafe, unprofessional, and distressing experience I endured.

I chose to stay here as the price was ok and the hotel in a reasonable distance of Gare du Nord by bus. It made the job for a short night stay. The checking (around 10 pm) was however very very long despite the receptionist working as fast as he could (he is serving 2 hotels which is too much for 1 person). Room was clean, with minimum equipment (with the sink directly in the room), and not too noisy despite the hotel being in the middle of the roadways.

Dear S., Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We are glad to hear that you found our location convenient and that the room met your cleanliness standards. However, we sincerely apologize for the long wait you experienced during check-in. We understand how frustrating this can be, and we will review our staffing to improve this aspect of our service. Your comments are invaluable for us, and we hope to welcome you back in the future with an even better experience. Best regards, Aldo Greet Paris Porte de la Chapelle - Aréna

the receptionist guy was too much .he should be more polite and not so uptight and speak calmly to clients . Some things could have been said more gently as people are coming for holidays and not o a military camp with sergeants speaking to you so roughly.

Dear MO H., Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We sincerely apologize for the behavior of our receptionist during your stay. It is our goal to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere, and we regret that this was not reflected in your interactions. Your feedback is invaluable, and we will address this matter with our team to ensure that all our staff communicate in a polite and friendly manner. We want every guest to feel relaxed and at home during their holiday. We appreciate your comments and hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back, providing you with a much more pleasant experience. Best regards, Aldo Greet Hôtel Porte de la Chapelle - Aréna
