I recently stayed at the Ibis Manchester Centre on Portland Street, a hotel I haven't visited in several years. While the interior upon arrival is quite modern and appealing, I found this to be somewhat deceptive, acting as "smoke and mirrors" for the reality of the room interiors. The rooms are due for a facelift, they are no different to my last stays and Id imagined a much different space. While the space was adequate for a single overnight stay, I would be reluctant to book an extended trip here and stay in one of these rooms. Basic tea and coffee are provided then you have to figure out where to plug in the kettle. Then I spotted a power cube in the corner (with usb ports) so the kettle moved to there. The room was clean and tidy but there is not a lot of room. I found the general condition of the corridors were drab, grey and uninviting. A concern was the small bathroom (which strongly resembled a unit you might find on a train). Very compact. Disturbingly, there was a noticeable whiff of raw sewage that could be detected when stood within which was unpleasant and unhygienic. If your room is facing onto Portland Street be prepared for the noise from traffic in the morning when it starts to build. Breakfast arrangements are notably awkward. I had to leave the IBIS by its rear door and run across an open courtyard at the back of the hotel to access the Novotel next door, which hosts the breakfast service. It was raining and Id not thought about an umbrella. Im sure I did see some in the IBIS reception though but instead I made a run for it there and back. The breakfast itself at the Novotel was adequate, providing standard fare. However, the dining experience was let down by a distinct lack of service with a smile from the staff, making the start of the day less welcoming. Some of the hot items were missing and another guest had to point this out to a member of the team to ask for replenishment. This hotel has a modern interior but is let down by its tired, aging rooms and internal infrastructure. The bathroom issue and the awkward, breakfast setup make it difficult to recommend for anything more than minimal stopovers.

Room was ideal for the 2 of us. It's perfect for a weekend. Room was clean and tidy. Only downside we had to have our breakfast in the Novotel across the square at the rear of the hotel. The cooked breakfast was unremarkable, probably due to catering for 2 hotels.

Overall we had a good stay. The hotel is in a good central location, clean and comfortable with friendly, helpful, staff. Breakfast was good and, although rooms are not the most modern, it is a good, reasonably priced, base for exploring Manchester

There was a distinct lack of customer service with a smile from the staff, making the start of the day less welcoming. Was it good value, no I dont think so.
