Legend Le Grand is a beautiful old hotel and gets many things right, but a number of things wrong. Room was pretty small and had very little storage for a tourist hotel. Room had some trash and clothing from prior occupant when we checked in. People who design these rooms obviously never stay in them. Bathroom door is a slider that left a gap. Not only does that mean the bathroom noise goes into the main room, but you could actually see the other person sitting on the toilet form the main room. Crazy. Breakfast was terrific, but service at dinner in the more casual restaurant took over two hours.

We were treated incredibly well by Sam Visscher from the moment we arrived to the day we checked out. He is to commended for his exceptional customer service and attention to every detail. We felt seen by him and celebrated. We were impressed by all of the Legend The Grand Amsterdam staff from the front desk to the breakfast staff to the doorman. A special thank you to not only Sam, but the Val, the highly skilled but more importantly lovely bartender and Paul the Legend historian and very proficient valet and doorman. Our uber driver didn’t want to drive up to the door so he walked our luggage with us over to where he was around the corner. What a great last impression of the Sofitel! Thanks for everything! As a historical property that the grand sits on, and a frequent guest of Sofitel legend Cartagena, I have always been a fan of how the legend category preserves the setting and blends it organically with the 5 star standard where it sits at. In Amsterdam particularly the staff shines no shorter than any establishment of the same class. Each and every one interaction was kind and professional. I commend all the staff that interacted with me as above and beyond. The negatives: first the room, where there were some generic (ibis like if you ask me) depictions of Dutch art in a horrible stencil young designer-like simplification. Such as the piece above the bed and a feeling of an outdated room. Bathrobe which is for me a benchmark was sandpaper-evoking. This does continue further into a not so clear menu of services or even an à la carte pillow menu, which is deeply hidden in the QR codes on you have to scan on the tv. Materials seem outdated , the lack of a bathtub was appalling and even the shampoo was bad so I had to use my own. Carpets and wallpaper need a bit of an overhaul. Next is the tech. Spotty Wi-Fi and a need to register plus constant disconnection made the experience lesser. Scan to download QR codes for services is absolutely unacceptable. So as to forced registry to Accord all to even have free WiFi. This goes even further with the ‘my media’ connection which is hit and miss. And not speedy enough to handle professional institutional vpn. Breakfast was another terrible point. All fresh and good, but a terrible limited selection. Finally there is the historical tour that could be on demand. As someone like me choose the legend category mainly for its historic vale it would be nice to get a more personalized guide.
