Why visit Lake Tekapo
Lake Tekapo is packed with beauty and serenity. The area is a UNESCO listed dark sky reserve, one of the only ones in New Zealand and the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, so along with all the visual delights to behold during the day, sky gazing at night is out of this world. Not to be thought of as sleepy, Lake Tekapo offers a host of activities ranging from witnessing flowers bloom during the lupin flowering season and stargazing from a hot pool to hiking, jet boating and taking to the skies for a scenic flight.
When to visit Lake Tekapo
You can visit Lake Tekapo year-round, though it's not a particularly warm area. Average temperatures in summer (December - February) hit the high teens to low twenties in degrees celsius. Visiting over spring (September - November) sees the lupin flowers in bloom and adds colour to the scenery; however it can be cold and wet this time of year. Winter sees cold temperatures with some snowfall. There are nearby ski resorts for those wishing to ski.
