We did not enjoy our 4 night stay here, with our disappointment starting on arrival. As Gold Accor members, we chose this hotel to gain the points and should have been awarded a room upgrade, but this was not given, due to "unavailability". The rules do not state "if available', but should be awarded on booking. Despite our protestations and despite our booking being made in early March this year, we were not granted an upgrade. This was a hugely disappointing start. We advised reception that if an upgrade was not going to be awarded, then they should NOT have taken our booking in March. Our room was also disappointing, being small and not feeling like a "Privilege" room. I guess a fridge and robes did that, but the overall ambience was disappointing with no easy chairs available. We also suffered from undue noise into the early hours on two nights from an adjoining room, due to a connecting door between the two. Location of the hotel was very good, with plenty of parking and a short 3-4 minutes walk to the Park & Ride into Chester, with buses every 10 minutes. With the journey into Chester just 10 minutes, this was very handy. Breakfast we found very disappointing. The carpet in the breakfast room around the servery was very badly stained and deserving of a good clean. Breakfast choice was an unstartling selection, with very poor fried eggs. Of the two coffee machines available, one was not serving coffee and the other dispensed a very poor tasting latte. Despite reporting this to staff at the time, this situation remained the same throughout our 4 night stay. It was also abundantly clear that staffing at breakfast was woefully inadequate, and this showed with no-one to ask for poached eggs or an omelette, tables were not being cleared in reasonable time and guests were left struggling to find a clean table. During our stay, we had to renew/rescan our door card keys 5 times! As if this was not bad enough, whenever we went to reception, there was never anyone there and no bell or buzzer to call anyone. So, we either had to wait for someone to pitch up or call out for someone from the back office. This is not very convenient for the customer and very frustrating! Clearly, the door key system is inefficient and needs fixing and a simple buzzer on the reception desk to summon assistance would help. Overall, we did not consider our stay a pleasant one, and did not feel that standards were high enough or that we felt we were being looked after. We therefore did not consider it good value for money. So much so, that we would advise those looking for a hotel in the area to go elsewhere. Rated as No. 28 out of 49 pretty much says it all and we were so disappointed we will not be staying at a Mercure again in the future.

Hi Glendair, Thank you for taking time to comprehensively review your stay with us in Chester. I am very sorry indeed that your experience was disappointing. Having spoken with the team I understand that an upgrade was not available, bedroom upgrades are done when they are available, as you booked a privilege room the upgrade is to a superior room of which we have two, both were booked during your stay and you are right that these are subject to availability. I am sorry that this was disappointing and understand from the team that you were offered additional complimentary drinks as an alternative. Thank you for your feedback regarding the breakfast room carpet. We regularly have this professionally cleaned but recognise that around the buffet area it is not the best floor covering for that environment as such it is being replaced with a more suitable alternative in the coming few weeks - thank you for highlighting this. We typically receive very positive comments regarding breakfast so I am sorry that this was not your experience. We have recently upgraded our coffee machines to offer a bean to cup experience. Unfortunately we have had some teething issues which led to one temporarily being out of service, I am sorry that this clearly affected your experience, I can happily share that it has been replaced this morning. Thank you for your further feedback regarding the door system. Door cards can become wiped when stored close to mobile phones, that said we will further investigate your feedback to ensure no malfunction with the door system. I do hope that we are able to welcome you back in the future to demonstrate the ongoing improvements. Regards, Richard & all the team

I was staying due to a black tie event. When I arrived I realised that I had left my dress at home. The young lady on reception was so helpful and totally understood the time constraints of the situation. She found the location of the shops that I needed swiftly and I managed to get a new dress within an hour and 15 mins. Thank you so much Your location really helped due to being so close to Cheshire Oaks

We were greeted well, upgraded because of our diamond card , spoiled to an extra drink as we were celebrating 45th anniversary. The room was spacious and comfortable , breakfast excellent and we know the hotel very well. The greatest disappointment was the TV. I had to go to reception to have it rebooted at 5pm. We watched the news before going out for the evening . Turned it off at 6, and arrived back at 10pm. Undressed and in bed we turned the TV on again to be faced with " Loading" which never cleared. For a premium room this is not good PR . I tell you out of kindness. Get this problem sorted.please for future guests

HI Christopher, Thank you for sharing your feedback and thank you for telling us how it could have been improved too. I am so sorry you encountered issues with your TV, the TV management system is relatively new to us and the issue you encountered has been very rare since install, we will be sure to further investigate with the supplier. I really hope we are able to welcome you back again soon. Regards, Richard & all the team

Met by a very helpful reception staff who told us about park and ride and raceday. The rooms were clean and modern. The bed was comfortable The tv was large - very suitable for football. Park and ride 2 minutes away, the canal 2 minutes away and a costa coffee shop 2 minutes away

Hi Heather. Thanks so much for taking time to share your feedback, I am so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us in Chester and look forward to welcoming you back again soon. Regards, Richard & all the team

Would not stay again, unfair parking notices issued

Gary W TripAdvisor review

This is a large hotel with 2 floors but no lift! The staff are friendly and helpful although it is very hard to get through to the front desk as they are usually too busy to answer the phone. We stayed for 5 nights (May 2024). About a two weeks after our stay I received penalty notices amounting to £500 for parking in the hotel car park (free for guests) . I am certain I gave the details of my vehicle to hotel. I appealed to the parking company "Smart Parking" stating that I was a guest of the hotel (I provided written proof) however, they chose to ignore this and said they would take me court if I did not pay up! I tried to ring the hotel several times but it took me a number of days to get through. I even rang the groups main office in France. Eventually, with their help, I did manage to get through and today I have received an assurance that the penalty notices will be cleared. Hope fully that will happen. It is clear that anybody staying at this hotel runs the risk of incurring a penalty charge for parking and will have to go great lengths to resolve the matter. I will not use this hotel again and would advise any body else not to use it!

Thank you for your feedback, Gary. As we have communicated previously the only way that charges are issued is when a vehicle is not registered by inputting the registration in to the tablets at the reception desk. We have confirmed we have requested cancellation through smart parking and how the completion of this will be communicated to you. As such I must say it does not feel fair given the efforts of the hotel team that you have left a negative review when the process your seem to understand as being required was not completed. The requirement to register vehicles is clearly sign posted on entrance to the car park and throughout the car park too. I hope that you would reconsider the relevance of your review and remove it. Regards, Richard & all the team
