We were staying in Paignton for 2 nights visiting friends. We had a good room: we appreciated the robes and the comp drinks, also the offer of an ice bucket (the minibar fridges were being temperamental). However the attitude of one or two of the staff on duty at breakfast was not great. Day 1 - My wife asked if it would be possible to have porridge. The answer was “it’ll take 15 minutes”; no pro-active offer to take an order. It left my wife uncertain if the kitchen was preparing the food or not, so she had to go back and ask. Day 2 - duty manager being openly high-handed with the waiting staff. Hotel guests shouldn’t have to overhear comments like “I don’t want to hear you say ‘I don’t know about this’. Hard work only today ok?” The time for a pep talk is before the restaurant opens. Also there was a lot of rearranging of tables and chairs: again, could this not have been done ahead of time, before the restaurant opened? Also my wife ordered porridge again; the chef missed the ticket first time around so we had to wait 25 minutes for it to be served. We like Mercure hotels; they are our first choice when we’re looking for somewhere to stay, and we appreciate the benefits that Gold membership brings. This is the first time in 18 months where our loyalty wasn’t acknowledged by reception, so that was also disappointing.

The hotel is located on the sea front with excellent views but ruined by a fair ground directly outside. The town centre is a short walk away and well served with cafes and eateries. The hotel is clean, well presented and the staff polite and professional. A £15/day parking charge is payable but a space not guaranteed which caused a a major problem when returning to a full car park and being disabled. We also found some patrons were noisy in the corridors at night.

The staff from reception, house keeping and restaurant were absolutely amazing. Nothing was to much trouble. The soup and risotto were so tasty, all served with a big smile. Coffee and drinks service was excellent with purchases brought to your table. We will most definitely stay here again when in this area. The only down side was the refrigerator was not working, although this was changed the new one did not get much above room temperature. Last comment is something accord should look into as some visitors need a fridge for medicines.
