Good stay despite restrictions

Customer review rating 4.2/5

Mtc Couples - 05/01/2021 Confirmed reviews ALL

We booked an executive suite, the room was freezing when we arrived as the aircon/heating didn't work. But we were supplied with heaters which solved the problem. Not impressed by the receptionist when we checked in but all the other staff we encountered were excellent and we were well treated during our stay and the staff made every effort to provide a service despite government restrictions changing whist we were there. We have stayed here many times and like the hotel, service, food and location, though, perhaps understandably this year, some areas are looking a bit tired.

Hotel very quiet of course and a pity for staff and guests alike. Room was very comfortable and staff always courteous.

Comfortable hotel , polite staff but no prior warning of car park costs and no room service unsatisfactory.

Lovely hotel and location, however it would have been much better to have communicated the cost of the car park from the beginning rather than billing us at the end. It was also inconvenient to have to phone reception for more toilet paper and be told to come down to get it. Basic room service could still be supplied by leaving fresh tea/milk etc at room door each day. Also, asked if the final bill deducted the cost of room service while it's absent and told that no, prices still the same as before lockdown. Have emailed manager of hotel with above comments but received no reply. Woud have given at least a 9 score had we been contacted and had these issues rectified.

I've stayed before, the hotel is conveniently located for the business requirements I have in Exeter. The hotel makes like easy with its on site parking and holds an air of slightly better quality over the usual overnight business hotel brands.

A good stay though not as good as usual.

It was a good stay though having booked to use the jacuzzi, was disappointed to find it not working - the third time out of the last three times of staying with you. We used to get a complimentary drink voucher but appreciate the bar is closed. However, it might be a nice touch to have put a complimentary 'something' in the room to compensate. Minimal toiletries in bathroom compared to previous stays. No water and only tea/coffee for 2 people even though there were 3 of us staying. You've just lost the edge you once had in my opinion.

Fitted the bill perfectly

All good except NO TOILET BRUSH! I can't understand why some hotels do not provide one.

Wonderful stay despite Covid regulations

We had a great time. The staff were so helpful and friendly. Room service was excellent. It was all as good as it could have been, given the Covid rules.

Disappointed.

We arrived and checked in. There was no warm welcome, in the times we are in now there was no sanitiser point or anything, or if there was it didnt stand out. I was surprised to see no sanitisation in the room. All she said was first floor. No info on restaurant, pool or upsell of breakfast. No information that they charge you more and then it is refunded after your stay. And also the room was freezing, I had to go down and ask if the air con could be looked at only to be told it had broken and they were trying to fix it. (Surely i should have been informed)? Considering it was a freezing December night. Just wasn't up to usual standards. Check out in the morning the lovely lady was what I would have wanted on my arrival. First impressions is what counts.

Too many people of different social class now staying at the hotel. In our case this resulted in noisy guests who were drunk and making lots of noise - we were unable to sleep at all

Covid-safe, well-located

Mercure Southgate Exeter is a regular hotel for me, but I was really impressed with their balancing of Covid-safe steps and still maintaining a friendly welcome pre-Xmas

I have always in the past requested a twin bedded room on first / second floors facing the rear of the hotel and been allocated one. Sadly on this occasion we were given a twin bedded room on the ground floor facing the bonnet of a car!! I assumed that under the circumstances, the upper floors were not in use, but subsequently was told that was not the case. I cant believe that the hotel was so fully booked that a room on upper floors was not available on this occasion.

Good for family

We had to arrive in the early hours, due to a breakdown on our journey. The reception team were very helpful and accommodating. The room was great for our family and dog, breakfast was substantial and pool facilities good for the kids. Our only issues were the fact we weren't told to input our vehicle details on arrival so potentially will get a fine that will need disputing and the breakfast room was too warm! Otherwise fab!

Memorable stay

Poor - cold room, heating not working, hotel looked very tired

S C. Couples - 15/12/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

On arrival we were asked to pay up front for our two night stay which is unusual for a four star hotel. However, we agreed without any problem. Our first room we were given room 005, was very cold and the thermostat was not working. We asked immediately to change rooms, to which we were given room 176. This room also had a faulty thermostat but we did not discover this until we returned to our room at 10pm. On reporting this to the night porter we were given a blanket - with a hole in, to cover the bed. I slept in my fleece jacket, as the room was so cold. The following morning I spoke with the receptionist who said she would report the problem to the General Manager, we never heard from the General Manager - by the second evening the thermostat had not been fixed and our room remained cold. A seriously poor customer experience. With our complaints we asked the hotel management to refund 50% of our paid in advance bill, which was agreed to on us leaving the hotel at the end of our stay. Overall the whole hotel appeared tired, lots of chipped paint work, marked carpets. Both rooms we entered did not have any sign to imply that the rooms had been cleaned to Covid standard. Very limited bathroom supplies, just one shower gel and shampoo. Again very poor facilities for a 4 star hotel. Although we have stayed at this hotel a number of years ago - I would say the Mercure Hotel in Exeter Southgate it is well over due a refurbishment. The management need to have the decency to meet with customers who experience problems with such basic issues as unable to provide heating and also take the time to inform customers on arrival should the hotel knowingly be aware there are technical issues, as we experienced.

Nick Couples - 15/12/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

The stay was ok, our first room had some maintenance issues, the heating wasn't working and one of the bedside cabinets had collapsed. Initially, we were offered some standalone heaters in the room which I declined and so was then offered a room change. Not a great experience but I appreciate we are in difficult times.
