Mercure Fukuoka Munakata Resort & Spa 4 stars

​The hotel is ideal for a relaxing stay, located about an hour’s drive from Fukuoka Airport. We booked a Japanese-style room; although we didn’t receive an upgrade, the room was comfortable and spacious. ​The downside was that the hotel was extremely crowded during our stay. Breakfast was chaotic, and the evening lounge service was just as hectic, with hardly any tables available. There is an onsen on-site, but with so many guests, we only got to use it on our last night when it was the least crowded. ​The staff overall were friendly, especially Miss Tra from Vietnam, who spoke good English. There is also an outdoor swimming pool, but we didn't use it as it was packed. ​I forgot to mention—this hotel mainly caters to families, so expect a lot of children around!

We had a lot of fun and, overall, a decent stay. The staff were wonderful, consistently friendly, and welcoming. There were also several features that worked very well for families. The pool was shallow and filled with children, which was perfect for us because our four-year-old was swimming. The hotel provided plenty of fun inflatables, and our child had a great time. We also loved the children’s playroom, which had padded mats, toys, and games. It was a very useful and enjoyable space for families. However, it was only open from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., which felt unnecessarily restrictive. It would have been especially helpful to have access to it during the morning. The ping pong tables were another fun feature. The balls were in good condition, although the paddles were fairly worn, which was understandable. The lobby snack time was also a nice touch, with plenty of drinks and a small selection of snacks. The onsen was the clear highlight of our stay. There were several different pools, and our family spent a lot of time there. We absolutely loved it. Unfortunately, the condition and smell of the hotel significantly dampened our experience. There was a constant, extremely strong artificial chemical fragrance throughout parts of the property, particularly immediately outside the elevators. The smell was so intense that it made members of our family feel unwell. Even through the fragrance, we could still detect an underlying stale, musty, and slightly rotten odor, which made it seem as though the chemical scent was being used to mask a more significant problem. The carpets were also absolutely unacceptable. They were heavily stained throughout and looked dirty and extremely worn. The hotel advertises that it was recently renovated, but the carpets clearly do not reflect that claim. They need to be replaced, not simply cleaned. Between the stained carpets and the overwhelming artificial fragrance, the hotel never felt as fresh or renovated as advertised. These issues would need to be addressed before we could highly recommend the property. One large issue was the internet connection, which did not reach our room. Even when we did have it, it was extremely slow. Our traditional room was otherwise acceptable, but the futons felt old and the room had the same stale odor. The bathroom was extremely cramped and worn, similar in size and feel to an airplane bathroom. It was not visibly dirty, but nearly everything looked dated and tired. The lack of clear bathroom photos on the hotel website felt notable after seeing it in person. Food was another major drawback. The dinner buffet cost 8,800 JPY per person, although drinks were included. The hotel did offer a takeaway box for approximately 3,000 JPY, which is what we chose. There were many buffet options, but the selection became repetitive, particularly because there were very few alternative places nearby to eat. The allergen and dietary labeling was especially concerning. It was helpful that many foods had labels, but several appeared inaccurate or incomplete. Some items were simply marked as containing more than nine allergens without identifying them. At least one noodle dish was labeled vegetarian despite clearly containing ham, and several other dishes appeared to contain pork without indicating this. Anyone with allergies, dietary restrictions, or religious food requirements should be very cautious. There was also no lunch available outside of the conference catering during our stay. The closest practical option was Lawson, which required walking outside in extremely hot and humid weather. The area has limited taxi availability, and guests may need to rely on the hotel shuttle to reach the nearest train station. Once you arrive, you can feel somewhat stuck at the property. The spa booking process was also inconvenient. Appointments had to be booked in person at the spa during opening hours, but each time we went, the massage therapist was already providing a treatment and there was no one else available to assist us. This hotel has some genuinely excellent family features, including the wonderful onsen, child friendly pool, playroom, activities, and very kind staff. However, the overwhelming chemical fragrance, underlying unpleasant odors, and severely stained carpets had a major negative effect on our stay. The property has a lot of potential, but these issues need to be addressed before it can truly feel renovated or be highly recommended.
