Another great stay

Somewhat surprised to read recent reviews as we had a very comfortable stay. A few more guests than we normally encounter on a Sunday night but the guy on reception (Peter?) dealt with checking us in very smoothly. We booked a twin room which are larger than the standard doubles and it was very clean and cosy. I am a gold card member so we had a selection of complimentary soft drinks and snacks waiting for us. Parking was £6. We also got a complimentary drink in the bar before our meal. My son joined us for dinner and again for breakfast the next day. The dinner staff were excellent and we enjoyed the food.

The worst stay I've ever had

Looking for a hotel with wonderful facilities, where the staff can’t do enough to make your stay memorable, with lovely pool and spa facilities and where everything is well maintained? If that’s the case Mercure Nottingham Sherwood is NOT the hotel for you! We’ve stayed there many times over the years and found it to be great value for money, with exceptional service and good facilities. We were in for a rude surprise when we checked in this time. The hotel was very busy (we found out later that there was a Madness concert that evening in town), and with the new reception area very congested, we decided to go for a drink. There was one person serving at the bar and also covering the restaurant and making trays of cocktails and other drinks for the downstairs bar. Another guest told us they had been waiting 30 minutes to be served. After 35 minutes we received our drinks, having had absolutely no interaction from the staff member. No apology, no explanation, nothing. Given the hotel was pretty fully booked, having one member of staff covering the restaurant, the bar and the downstairs bar seemed both cruel to the staff member and very inconvenient to the paying guests. We gave up all thoughts of ordering something to eat at the hotel. After checking in to our teeny, tiny room (only one lift was working and that seemed to go up and down the floors for no reason so that the journey took ages), we decided to turn on the heating. The heating/air con system was so loud in all modes that it felt like we were taking off in a biplane from the local airport. I went to wash my hands – the basin plughole was blocked so it took 5 minutes to empty the water. Other guests told us of broken televisions in their rooms, and the same incredibly noisy heating systems. Every guest we encountered, whether in the lift sharing the random up—and-down-and-up-again journey, or queueing at reception, or trying to buy a drink at the bar, had their own story of just how awful an experience they were having at the hotel. We decided to go for a swim (and a nice session in the jacuzzi for me – one of the reasons for always booking this hotel is the good facilities and jacuzzi) to try to relax. When we’d checked in, the receptionist had asked if we would be using the leisure facilities – it would have been useful if they’d told us at that point that the jacuzzi was ‘closed for cleaning’. It remained ‘closed for cleaning’ until we checked out the following day. Some money has been spent on cosmetic refurbishment of the hotel – it would be much better spent on customer service training for staff, more staff, and basic building maintenance. One lift was out of order (you can imagine the chaos when around 40 guests checked in and then tried to use the lift to their rooms, with only one working lift which was randomly going up and down the floors. The new reception area is tiny compared to previously which made it impossible to get anywhere without tripping over suitcases and asking people to move out of the way. I’m sure the staff tried their best (there weren’t enough of them) but we found them to be totally disinterested, incommunicative and at times quite surly despite us trying to empathise with them. On one occasion while queueing for a lift from the 3rd floor, two housekeeping staff barged past us, carrying sheets and towels. One elbowed her way past me so hard that it spun me round – she didn’t even stop to apologise. There seemed no point in engaging the hotel staff to complain about all these things – there was constantly a long queue at reception and we felt, given other interactions during out stay that there was little point as the staff really didn’t care about anything. We’d paid £150 for one night, plus £12.50 for the car park, and that didn’t include breakfast either so it wasn’t a cheap stay. It’s sad to have to post such a negative review of a hotel that we have enjoyed for many years, but I honestly can’t think of any positive thing to say and we’ll be looking for somewhere else to stay on our regular Nottingham visits. There is nothing I can say to recommend this excuse of a hotel to you.

Nice hotel, convenient location but stressful stay and charged twice!

Booked to stay, prior to my wife's operation at Nottingham City Hospital, due to its convenient location and because we had stayed before and thought it was a nice hotel. From the beginning it was obvious things were not right with hassled and distracted check-in staff; something to do with Siemens booking which seemed to be the main topic of discussion and staff’s attention. Finally, after long wait, we got checked in and everything was ok, until our early check-out at around 6.40am. At this point I was informed that I hadn't paid for the room.... to which I explained I had paid (including for parking) when I checked in. However, reception said they had no record of this and by now my wife (on crutches) had carried on to the car, so was outside. I decided just to pay again, as I didn't have the time and my wife was outside (wondering what was going on). I thought, this could easily be sorted later as we were in danger of being late for my wife's hospital admission . Fine, mistakes happen but on checking my credit card my suspicions were confirmed - I had been charged twice! Fine, I thought if I ring the hotel this will easily be sorted, but no! After numerous phone calls, messages and promised return calls ( not happening) I was asked to fill in details for ‘an investigation’ and it took a week to get my money back. Furthermore, a email complaint to the manager (as I was informed this was the way to make a complaint) has still not been acknowledged/responded to? I do not think this is acceptable and wonder how many customers money the hotel hangs-on to whilst making interest from it? This was all down to the incompetence of staff/systems/processes and I expect better from a major hotel chain - a recent refund I had from Sports Direct was acknowledged and processes the same day so why can’t a hotel do the same when it is clearly THEIR mistake? This was meant to be a stress reliever but caused more stress!

Not worth the money

We booked this hotel for my partners Xmas party. We arrived at 3pm to check in and the queue was absolutely ridiculous. Ever have I ever seen a queue like this. 40mins of waiting for us to finally check in! We was then told we had to pay £12 for the car park, not happy about this especially as the car park entrance is a literal car killer, no drop kerb and scraped my bumper on the floor getting in and out! The room was tiny, nothing like the photos, the lighting was dull and as I needed to do my hair and make up this was a struggle. There was a dressing table but I couldn’t see a thing. When we was ready we decided to go and have a drink in the bar, well this never happened because we was waiting for over 10 minutes to be served. There wasn’t even a queue. Just one guy on his own serving the whole area. He said he would be another 5 mins before he was free to serve us so we just upped and left at this point. This hotel wasn’t cheap and I would definitely expect more. Won’t come Back again and wouldn’t recommend.

Booked Mercure thinking it would be a smooth process but boy I was wrong. Arrived early and checked in and was told to come back at 3 for our key, not a problem we knew check in was 3.00pm.Came back at 3.10 to the biggest queue to check in I've ever seen. We went to the desk as we had already checked in but were told to join the line and wait, 1 hour later still in the queue, never again Mercure you are a joke, what happened to self check in like the cheaper options of accommodation. Poor Very Poor.
