Attended a meeting at the Mercure Hotel and the room was laid out very nicely, tea and biscuits at the entrance, water, sweets, pens and paper on the tables. John was especially helpful and friendly during our time at the hotel.

Great stay let down by staff

We had a pleasant stay and enjoyed the room and the facilities that were on offer, however the level of customer service that was presented at certain times was somewhat rude. We stayed one night at the hotel and decided in the evening to see if it was possible for late checkout. Unfortunately there was no one on reception and another couple waiting before us. After a ten minute wait at the 24/7 reception desk, a man returned to the desk explaining that he'd been spraying the hotel with spray due to the strange smell that was everywhere. He first served the couple that were ahead of me. To apologise for the inconvenience of their wait, he gave them a free breakfast. When it was our turn to be served he charged us the late checkout fee (which I did think was something of a double standard after offering the previous couple complimentary breakfasts). As I paid, the employee then started talking to another customer before I had time to finish my interaction with him, I then had to wait another five minutes until he'd finished with those people before concluding my business with him. I must admit, I thought this was rude, especially as the person after me had only just arrived. My second experience of poor customer service was on handing in an earring that I had found in the swimming pool earlier. Realising that there was a four deep queue to speak to reception, I asked a security guard if I could give the earring to him, to which he replied, "reception is just over there". That being said, there were certain members of the team that were really warm, friendly and inviting; the daytime reception staff that originally greeted us and the lounge / bar staff (especially one employee named John who was on at breakfast and another lady - again on at breakfast - who's name escapes me now). As I said, the hotel was an enjoyable experience but it's such a shame that certain members of staff can have such a large impact on the quality of our stay.
