This was a weekend staycation while attending &Julliette. SO is a stylish, design-led five-star hotel that delivers strong visual impact and a premium urban experience—but with a few trade-offs around value and consistency. It is well positioned in the heart of Auckland CBD, near Britomart and the waterfront, within easy walking access to Commercial Bay, Viaduct Harbour ferry terminals and nightlife Our upgraded room was modern, bold, spacious with fashion-inspired interiors floor-to-ceiling windows and city/harbour views. It was open-plan, which tended to result in a waste of space and poor furniture placement. The bathroom featured the signature freestanding bathtubs, separate shower and toilet, but was poorly lit, especially for making up and shaving. Checking in took while as only one on receptionist on duty. The TV had a faulty connection and needs replacing. There was an annoying mechanical noise in the ceiling area, which may have come from the lifts.

Confusion regarding which beverages were included resulted in an additional charge for the red wine. Positioning the wine separately from the included water would help prevent this misunderstanding

The property is great - well located, the staff is super friendly and all the amenities are there. Yet somehow nothing stood out! Maybe this is the case for all hotels in Auckland (I cannot be sure as I stayed only here), but comparing to the hotels I stayed at in the South island (St Moritz Queenstown and Peppers Bluewater at Lake Tekapo) that went over and above and also provided some amazing welcome gifts for our honeymoon, SO/ was lacking in some aspect despite being a 5-star. That being said, the breakfast buffet is excellent - gluten free brownies are to die for. There were some flies on the desserts in the dessert section so would advise to avoid any other dessert apart from the brownies as they are placed in a different section. Also, the rooftop bar has mesmerising views of the Auckland Harbour and the good and drinks are great as well.
