Mercure Chester Abbots Well Hotel 4 stars

It is not often I am left speechless but it happened this morning, then it got even worse. Having booked this hotel for three nights over the Christmas period, 24th 25th & 26th Dec 2023, also the Gala Christmas Day Dinner, which was £75 extra pp, we received an email earlier today informing us that the actual Christmas Day Lunch had been cancelled! No reason, meagre apology and suggested three local alternatives. We rang the 'three alternatives' only to be told they were all fully booked for Christmas Day Lunch. Each one of them were mortified that this hotel had cancelled their Christmas Day Luncheon, leaving us no alternative, and all of them offered us their sympathy in the most sincere form, especially when we told them we were staying there three days! We only booked this hotel because it had a spa and pool so alarm bells then rang for me. I telephoned the hotel and asked were the bars going to be open, and received a very doubtful reply, like... well I don't need to elaborate on what hours that will be! Then I asked the million dollar question....will the spa and pool be open on Christmas Day? Not too sure came the reply, but I will transfer you! No....the spa and pool will NOT be open Christmas Day!!!! I explained our situation regarding our three day stay and was told they too were very surprised that the Lunch had been cancelled and only found out themselves a half hour before I spoke to them. Extremely, extremely bad management, total disregard, no consideration or respect whatsoever has been given to the 'likes of us' and probably many more too. I am still speechless, beyond disappointed, and trying to pick up the pieces of a ruined Christmas. Avoid this hotel like the plague, it certainly does not deserve the business, and my sympathy goes to some of the staff but not others, who told down right lies on behalf of the management. Your only a number. With management like this, I'd watch your back.

Stayed two nights staff have been excellant and work hard. Food excellant tasty hot. Was on a coach trip and was near Chester and Liverpool and Cheshire oakes shopping. Well done Abbot Wells keep the good work up.

Have to say I honestly don't know what the poor reviews are for, I stayed with a group of friends on Saturday as we were booked for of their Christmas Party Nights. We booked to stay over too, and arrived at 3pm, Susan on reception was absolutely lovely, explained anything we wanted to know and directed us to our rooms. We used the 'spa' facilities first off, the Steam Room (no lighting in there, possibly needs looking at, the sauna and jacuzzi were brilliant. Didn't go in the pool personally. The area is tired and dated for sure however we spent an enjoyable hour in there. The rooms (twin) are spacious, clean and comfortable with coffee making facilities etc. Plenty of sockets, adequate bathroom, although the water pressure in the shower could have been better. The event itself was well organised, no complaints about the food nor drinks service. All the staff are absolutely awesome, friendly, smiling, helpful and chatty. Breakfast which was included in the room price was incredible, one of the best that I've had at a hotel in the UK. Usually charged at £17.95 (and well worth it if paying). Plenty of fresh juices, coffee, tea, cappuccino, fruit teas etc. Toast station, selection of pastries, cereals, fresh fruit and yoghurt, continental meats selection. Self serve hot breakfast buffet with eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, hash browns, sausages, bacon, black pudding. Worth going for the breakfast alone! We will most definitely be back and will keep an eye out for other party nights that you host. Thank you to all your staff Ana & Jan x

Having picked a hotel that has a pool I was disappointed to find it is actually a kids training pool for most of the time. The chance to relax is almost impossible with the noise of a whole group of kids and instructors taking up the whole of the shallow end. Absolute chaos on a Sunday afternoon! We couldn't even borrow a woggle because of health and safety!? Such a shame as this is clearly not what is advertised on the website. Beware of false advertising! I will not return.
