Met by a very helpful reception staff who told us about park and ride and raceday. The rooms were clean and modern. The bed was comfortable The tv was large - very suitable for football. Park and ride 2 minutes away, the canal 2 minutes away and a costa coffee shop 2 minutes away

Would not stay again, unfair parking notices issued

TripAdvisor rating 1.0/5

Gary W TripAdvisor review

This is a large hotel with 2 floors but no lift! The staff are friendly and helpful although it is very hard to get through to the front desk as they are usually too busy to answer the phone. We stayed for 5 nights (May 2024). About a two weeks after our stay I received penalty notices amounting to £500 for parking in the hotel car park (free for guests) . I am certain I gave the details of my vehicle to hotel. I appealed to the parking company "Smart Parking" stating that I was a guest of the hotel (I provided written proof) however, they chose to ignore this and said they would take me court if I did not pay up! I tried to ring the hotel several times but it took me a number of days to get through. I even rang the groups main office in France. Eventually, with their help, I did manage to get through and today I have received an assurance that the penalty notices will be cleared. Hope fully that will happen. It is clear that anybody staying at this hotel runs the risk of incurring a penalty charge for parking and will have to go great lengths to resolve the matter. I will not use this hotel again and would advise any body else not to use it!

Thank you for your feedback, Gary. As we have communicated previously the only way that charges are issued is when a vehicle is not registered by inputting the registration in to the tablets at the reception desk. We have confirmed we have requested cancellation through smart parking and how the completion of this will be communicated to you. As such I must say it does not feel fair given the efforts of the hotel team that you have left a negative review when the process your seem to understand as being required was not completed. The requirement to register vehicles is clearly sign posted on entrance to the car park and throughout the car park too. I hope that you would reconsider the relevance of your review and remove it. Parking fine

Darren H TripAdvisor review

I am an Uber driver and I came to pick up some guests from the mercure in Chester, I waited for the customers and a few weeks later I received a parking fine, I disputed this as I was working and waiting on guests from the hotel, to my shock I ended up receiving a fine for £170 due to not paying the original fine, I have now been I touch with hotel numerous times via email and also In Person, I have sent all the evidence in that I was picking up guests, everything that has been requested, yet I am still not getting any response to inform me that this fine has been cancelled. I have now received yet another debt collection letter. I am extremely disappointed.

Hi Darren, Thank you for sharing your feedback. Given your circumstance we will be able to arrange cancellation of the charge for you, if you could please send to the TC number and vehicle registration to When the system was installed we reached out to all taxi companies in the area as we have the ability to add registrations to a white list so anyone staying in the carpark for pick ups etc that exceed the 10 minute grace period do not need to input their registration at reception, unfortunately we never heard anything back from Uber. For future reference when you stay in the car park for longer than 10 minutes you need to register your vehicle at reception. Regards, Richard & all the team

BradWinterton Business - TripAdvisor review

I recently stayed in the Mercure Chester Abbots Well hotel for 4 nights on a business trip. This was not my first choice of hotel but the most suitably located alternative. I would rate the hotel “average”. The hotel was easy to get to and well located. Sufficient parking was available at all times. The hotel seems quite aged but has some good facilities. The building is old and has creaky floors that sink in places when stepped on, with a strange damp/fusty kind of smell in the corridor. Room: The room I had booked for me was a “compact” room and it certainly lived up to that. Whilst the room size wasn’t necessarily an issue (I was simply using as a hub to stay central to where I was working), it could definitely be considered snug. The bed was fairly comfortable but I would prefer firmer pillows (personal preference). The bathroom was small but had everything you needed, though I did have to ask for shower gel to be refilled (which you would think would form part of the room cleaning checks), but these were nice smelling products. The shower was a little difficult to get the right temperature due to its mixer tap and wasn’t particularly the most hygienic (there was orange/pinking bacteria evident in the shower head). You get a small open wardrobe area (with iron & ironing board — very useful!) and a small desk with the tea & coffee facilities. The tea/coffee tray with the inbuilt kettle was awkwardly placed if you wanted to use the desk to work on (the right-hand plug socket also didn’t work here, room 212, which I only discovered when the kettle didn’t boil). There are several plugs around the room but none beside the bed, which is frustrating. There are USB-A ports, however, most modern devices now charge with USB-C rendering these useless. The room has no air conditioning or fan, so I left the windows open to keep the room cool, a downside of this was a humming noise from outside at various points from some form of heating equipment maybe? My most disappointing aspect of the room was the roller blind for the window, it didn’t not adequately block light out and with the extended sunlight hours at this time of year this meant my room was bright extremely late into the evening and very early in the morning which made it difficult to sleep. A blackout curtain would be ideal here. I asked at reception if there were any eye covers/masks available to be told no, so I didn’t sleep my best. Watch out to check your room door closes properly when you leave (you may need to give it a slam) as mine kept getting stuck, leaving my room open. I did also return once to my room being open following cleaning/housekeeping — perhaps this could be looked at? The room key kept failing also, but reception was great at sorting this in a matter of seconds for me. Food & Drink: Food here is an entirely mixed bag. The hotel has a Brasserie restaurant and a bar area that both serve food. The menu in both is very limited and pricing is on the higher side. The Brasserie restaurant is excellent quality but the portion sizes are lacklustre. I tried the beef feather blade on my first night which was delicious, but I was left disappointed as the meal wasn’t very filling. The bar food is also limited by the fact there is a sandwich menu, unfortunately this is only available until 6pm, after which you can choose burgers, a pizza or a limited selection of other meals. I tried a burger and it was okay (the side of fries was overdone and tasted greasy), and the pepperoni pizza looked nice but was tasteless. Both places you pay a 10% service charge on your food & drink. I opted for a Deliveroo meal on my last evening as I felt I had explored all the food options I would have liked that the hotel had to offer. Staff: The staff I interacted with were all great. I was always met with a greeting when I walked into the reception, and the restaurant/bar staff were all friendly and fairly attentive. I did wait a bit longer in the Brasserie restaurant though, which was odd as it was quiet on the evening I visited. My only gripe was when I spoke to reception about struggling to sleep due to the light from the blinds in the room, there was no suitable solution and it was simply recommended I visit Sainsbury’s to see if they sold eye masks, which felt a bit against the well advertised “10/10 stay promise” that I saw around. Health Club: The health club is a great facility with included services in the hotel package. I used the pool, jacuzzi and sauna during my visit. There is an easy sign in process at the health club reception, you provide your name, room number and time in/out on paper (although GDPR springs to mind here, what a great way to let everyone know who is out of their rooms…). Aside from this, towels and locker padlocks are provided also. The pool is an adequate size but all the times I visited there were swimming lessons in progress, I only wish there were more “free swimming” times advertised for adults only. The sauna and jacuzzi were a nice addition and great to relax after a long day working. There was also a gym and I believe sun beds were available too, although I didn’t use those so can’t comment on them.

Hi Brad, Thank you for taking time to share your feedback, this is really very helpful to ensure we continue to develop our offering to guests. There have been a number of items in your feedback which have made me question how we do things and potential for additional items we could offer to our guests. We have recently moved to a fully home cooked menu which we try to deliver seasonally ensuring we use ingredients that are in season. This does mean that after a number of days unless you were willing to try dishes you may not typically chose it could become limited. We also offer special dishes in addition to the seasonal menu to support additional choice, I am sorry that we were not wholly successful in offering a dining option each night for you. I really hope we are able to welcome you back in the future to demonstrate our continued service improvement. Kind regards, Richard & all the team
