Located in Sector 1, near Sukhna Lake, this sustainable outdoor art project was started by Nek Chand, a government official, in 1957. He used recycled materials and found objects to create this whimsical world and continued working on the project until his death in 2015.

His famous Rock Garden now spans 40 acres and is one of the most popular places to visit in Chandigarh. The labyrinthine garden is split into three "phases," and you'll need at least a few hours to explore this fantastical wonderland. 

• See the sustainable sculptures: There are over 2,000 sculptures - fashioned from broken crockery, glass bangles, and industrial waste - in the sprawling garden. From animals to dancers and villages, you'll want to take some time to admire his work. 

• Photograph the waterfall: The main attraction of the Rock Garden is the waterfall. Make your way to Phase 2, and you'll stumble upon this cascading waterfall and canal. The scene is absolutely picture-perfect - so don't forget your camera.

Built in 1958 by damming the seasonal Sukhna Choe Stream, Sukhna Lake is a beautiful artificial reservoir fed by rainwater from the Himalayas. It covers over 3 square kilometres and serves as a hub of entertainment and relaxation for residents and visitors. If you need a break from city life or just want to relax, Sukhna Lake is the perfect place.

• Go boating: Paddle boats and shikaras (traditional boats) are available for hire if you want to float on the lake's peaceful waters.

Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the complex currently serves as an administrative and cultural centre for the states of Punjab and Haryana. But just because it's a functioning government building doesn't mean it's not one of the most popular places to visit in Chandigarh.

Spread across 30 acres in Sector 16, the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden is home to a whopping 50,000 rose bushes and 1,600 varieties, making this the largest rose garden in Asia.
