Sophisticated, historic Alicante is not just about sun-drenched beaches and palm-lined promenades – it has a vibrant cultural scene and a centuries-old heart where Gothic churches and whitewashed houses line cobbled lanes. And when the sun goes down, this ancient city becomes the buzzing hub of one of the liveliest nightlife destinations on Spain’s Costa Blanca. However, unlike many other European destinations, nightlife in Alicante has its own well-established rhythm, kicking off with early-evening tapas and continuing in terrace bars before heading to beachfront clubs in the wee hours. And from there, bopping can take you right into the first light of morning.
You’ll likely do your partying in five areas of this gorgeous city – and all but one are concentrated within the pedestrian-friendly centre, well within walking distance of each other. Going de tapeo (tapas bar-hopping) is a popular – and utterly delicious – way to kick off your evening in Alicante. Sundown in Alicante generally occurs between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, depending on time of year. For glorious views over the Med at dusk, check local times to arrive 30 minutes before sunset, so you can catch the golden hour light shimmering across the sea.
To catch spectacular panoramas as the sun goes down, venture up the landmark Mount Benacantil to Santa Bárbara Castle on foot, by taxi or lift from Avinguda Juan Bautista Lafora. Once up there, La Torreta keep at the highest point of the complex has incredible 360-degree views over Alicante Bay and the city’s red rooftops to the mountains further inland.

Alicante’s appetite for late, late clubbing is legendary. The city boasts several high-energy mega-clubs pumping with Latin and electronic beats until dawn – and often much, much later.
Consistently rated among the world’s best 50 nightclubs, Marmarela is hands down Alicante’s most popular nightclub. It’s in pole position down on the waterfront promenade, with spectacular views over the Med. A hedonistic lido by day, at night a roster of international DJs spin tunes from reggaeton to techno against a background of flashing neon.
If the clock strikes 4am and you’re not ready to call it a night, make a beeline for Sala Stereo, open until 6:30am at the weekend. The place is renowned for its diverse DJ lineups – including local favourite Salvador Ispierto, aka Impulse Spy DJ – and you’ll hear a mix of indie, house and rock before the disco lights get going and the speakers blare out retro summer classics.
