We were upgraded to a superior room type with an amazing view of the ocean. Room was spotless and nice every afternoon they had free champaigne and beer for all guests from 3-6pm they then had a free night cap from 9pm- 11pm which were spirits ( whisky, vodka etc. All came with light nibbles. Breakfast was buffet and lovely - we had smoked salmon eggs benedict each morning amongst a host of other food Onsen great A bit far out of town but they do have a shuttle in at 0830 and 1100 and return around 3pm and 530pm, there is a seven eleven within an easy walk Plenty of parking was available for free. Staff very efficient and helpful.

Disappointing

I have to agree with many of the unflattering reviews. 1. The carpets on the 5th floor corridor was stained. The tatami room had cobwebs on the ceiling light. 2. Switched to a western room the 2nd night, a slight improvement but there were stains on the fake leather headboard and it was also...gasp peeling. It's the same condition in my friend's room so can't be a one off. Supposedly completed refurbishment in April 2024 but the hotel has a strangely incomplete feel about it. 3. As I switched room on the 2nd night, I stored luggage in the self service area and the lock malfunctioned when I tried to retrieve it in the evening. FYI, several other locks were already faulty when I tried in the morning 4. When I got to my new room on the 2nd night, the room door was left ajar and the room key I was just given did not work. Staff had to come up with a new key and I had to request that they stay while I made sure no one was in the room. 5. Billed as an onsen resort hotel but the onsen was mediocre. Only one restaurant on-site and it doesn't serve a la carte. 6. The one saving grace was the buffet breakfast, great quality and a wide choice with staff working hard to clear tables and replenish food. 7. I disagree with some of the reviews which said that staff were rude. I think they do try but many are trainees or part timers and all are working under pressure of systems and hardware limitations.

Mercure Beppu Resort is within minutes of downtown. The view from renovated sea view room is amazing. Dining venue is huge, though the quality of food can be improved.

Collected by the shuttle, from the station just after 5;30pm as the last shuttle from the station was 5:30pm. After an initial change of room for ocean view we were moved from a family room to twin room which better suited our needs. Hotel Onsen was amazing and well managed, shame it was only open morning and evenings, the outside Onsen with the scenic views was amazing. The local train station was about 15 minutes walk from the hotel which was useful as the first shuttle from the hotel was 11am. Reception staff were very helpful especially Koide Akiko, who was very helpful in arranging tour information in English for us and assisting as required. The hotel had a lounge area for afternoon and evening activities however we didn’t really access this even though as platinum members we had access, the lounge was very popular and at times Had little available space and did not feel welcoming due to its business. Breakfast was adequate large restaurant area, with multiple food options, evening meal the only option offered was a buffet option set price in the same restaurant but no option for alcarte, the other option for evening meals was the local 7-11. The hotel is popular with tour groups so breakfast could be busy dependent upon the number of coach tours being checked in. Overall it was a good stay with a very good Onsen facility and relaxation area. An area for improvement could be increasing the frequency of the shuttle and a dedicated members lounge might be an addition.
