Well Located - Cleanliness not Good

We were assigned a 2 bed apartment Room 504 There a smoky smell + a spray that obviously was to help smell, so mixed together was not pleasant. We were then moved to room below 404 and unfortunately in this room the cleaning of the room was very unsatisfactory, fingers marks on cupboards and drawers in kitchenette , splash back dirty in kitchen Kettle dirty inside Empty hand soap bottle in bathroom, 2 small hand towels left behind bathroom door from previous guests Sliding doors glass dirty in lounge area Wardrobe mirror doors fingers marks over them We went to report this on our exit, but no one on reception as on break! We didn’t report all this immediately as it was late when we moved room approx 9:30pm

I had a week long stay here. The hotel is located just off the lake and is convenient to most places in Canberra. I was also pleased with the kitchen, although disappointed in the size of the room as I thought I had booked on that would be slightly larger. In any case, nearly all of the good qualities of this hotel were outweighed by my on arrival experience on my first night. I am a young woman, travelling alone. While I am very capable, I was completely caught off guard by the check-in system established by this hotel should you arrive after hours. If you arrive to the hotel after 10pm, you can not check in and the front door of the hotel is locked. I was never told this, nor is this published on any of the confirmation emails I received or on the All.com app. So when I arrived at 10:40pm, after a delay in my journey, I was quite panicked about how to get in. To the right of the door on the wall, not clearly signposted, is a small lockbox with a plaque that reads “Please call this number or this number if you arrive out of hours.” This policy assumes the person checking in has service and is not from out of the country with no signal or service. I tried several times to call both numbers, but I was not able to get connected. For 30 minutes, I was stood alone, in a city I’m unfamiliar with, outside the hotel with no way to get in, no car, and no help. Up the street, I saw a man pass by on his way home from the gym. With no other option, I ran after him to ask if I could borrow his phone to call the number so that I could get access to my room key. While the man was very nice and helpful, this should never have had to happen and I should never have had to be in that situation. On top of this, when I finally was able to ring the number on the lockbox, I was asked to provide another credit card and all of the details on this credit card. Keep in mind, I am borrowing a strangers phone and he is just a few metres away (he was kind enough to walk away). Why is a credit card classified as an identity check when you already have one on file? Why am I made to read these numbers allowed in a public space? Finally, after “verifying my identity” I was given the lockbox code to get my hotel key which would open the front door and my room. Why couldn’t this have been emailed to me if I hadn’t arrived within hours? Why were “out of hours” check in not communicated to me or anywhere on the website? I was put in a vulnerable and uncomfortable position by this hotel just due to their out of hours check in policy. I sincerely hope this mechanism is fixed for any future visitors. I have contacted the hotel to notify them of my situation and to ask that they fix this in future, but it has been a week and I have still not heard back. Again, while the room was nice, this situation put me on edge and I will not be staying here again if the check in policy is not amended to account for situations like this.
