Last minute booking, as platinum member enjoyed a room upgrade and complimentary breakfast but no welcome gift given. Check in staff and breakfast team were very welcoming.

Overall very happy with the stay. Ideal location, nice view from our room, bed was comfortable, shower is great but some interesting experiences too. Chronologically: Firstly parking - onsite parking that is valet only. I don’t care about the price, but don’t hand my car over to others. So had to park offsite - this makes no sense - surely a mix of onsite parking could be offered like other hotels can manage. Staff member said ‘car parking up the road’ no specific directions given. Fortunately we knew Devonport well enough to know the location. Despite Gold membership there was no room upgrade or late checkout offered. When questioned the staff member said the next level of room was sold out. I double checked this fact when we went up to our room and the Accor App was still giving me the option of purchasing the better room - so something was clearly incorrect or the Devonport Novotel was not willing to provide an upgrade to Accor members. We enjoyed our welcome drink in the bar - friendly staff member there. Upon returning that evening we opened our balcony door to enjoy the view. Sadly this was not the experience we had hope for as there were several guests smoking on their balconies (including next door). This was also the case the next morning when we couldn’t even enjoy having the door open whilst sitting inside as the smoke was unbearable. Looking through the hotel information I was shocked to find no specific information banning smoking on the balconies. I think the door to the balcony needs a notice making this clear. So no room upgrade and paid for a balcony which could not be enjoyed. On checkout I reported this concern to staff who were very disappointed that we hadn’t reported this to reception when it happened - we said it was currently a situation in progress with the next door neighbour who was still there doing it. We were given our mini bar charge for free for compensation ($5) - not sufficient compensation or good enough at all. The bathroom in the room is really lovely. Someone took care to design a stylish and modern facility - then someone else came and ruined the aesthetic with the installation of the cheapest looking white plastic bottles and holders for consumables. They look terrible and ruin the bathroom experience. Everything else has chrome finishes and I wonder how much better this would be with matching holders and brown coloured bottles. Again other hotels do this so much better - it really does look like it was a cost saving measure to purchase the cheapest items available. The products themselves are fine, but the presentation is very poor. The shower bottles weren’t even installed level. This lets the bathroom experience down and that a cost cutting exercise was given higher priority than guest experience. Breakfast in the restaurant was ok. Staff were friendly and food was quite fresh. Charging for espresso coffee is a bit rich and should be included in the price as the coffee offered was extremely poor and tasteless - maybe staff don’t drink coffee or have proper training or supervision? I also pulled three plates from the rack before finding one that was clean and didn’t have food baked on it. This is just poor staff attention to detail. The restaurant was not busy. Also the branding of the restaurant looks like a cheap Asian Takeaway - not really in keeping with the vibe of a quality hotel in my opinion. Asian restaurants can be great (or divisive in the wrong location) but this one’s signage and name does not shout Novotel quality in my opinion. Overall I look forward to coming back again and would give the hotel another chance. The experience was positive and has the potential to be great - it wasn’t great this time as mentioned above - but with good attention to feedback and setting clearer boundaries for smoking (in the non smoking hotel), I am sure it can be. Please fix those horrible bottles and holders in the bathroom. Hobart Móvenpick does this better if you want an example. All the best - congratulations on being in a great location and having a modern building to potentially offer guests so much.

In relation to your room, you had booked one of our highest room categories, a Deluxe King Ocean View with Balcony and you were allocated the top floor. I appreciate that this may not have been clear at the time, and I’m sorry for the frustration this caused. Your comments regarding parking are also well noted. As a centrally located waterfront hotel, our on-site parking is limited and valet operated. That said, your feedback around clearer communication and better guidance to alternative parking options is fair, and something we can certainly improve. I’m particularly disappointed to hear about your experience with smoking on neighbouring balconies. Novotel Devonport is a non-smoking hotel, and while this does include balconies, your feedback highlights the need for clearer signage and more proactive intervention when these situations arise. I regret that this impacted your ability to enjoy the balcony you had chosen. With the bathroom amenities, these form part of Novotel’s global brand standard, including holders, and are consistent across the brand. However, your comments around presentation and installation are noted, and I will be reviewing this with the team to ensure everything is maintained to the standard our guests expect. I also appreciate your feedback on breakfast.
