Disappointing

A lovely position but not worth the cost and it was too hard to access the lodge in the rain and wind that we had for 3 days. My husband uses a walking frame, so we booked an accessible room. The room was fine, except we couldn’t get the heater going and had 3 visits from maintenance over 2 days to get it going again. The place is not setup for anyone with mobility issues, with the walk from our room difficult, even though it was reasonably close to the main building, it was gravelly had holes in the road, so had to drive back and forth to eat. We were told there were disability access walks close by, but the board walks around the lodge, except one to reception were too skinny and had no side boards. Very dangerous for anyone with a walking frame or wheelchair. If you have a disability don’t stay here.😞

A disgrace for the Peppers brand. Twice the price and half the quality from our last stay.

This was our third stay at Cradle Mountain Lodge. How sad to see it so poorly managed. Massive investment is needed to bring it back to the luxury standard that the prices suggest. My first reaction on entering our cabin was that someone had stolen the furniture. Compared to the photos on the website it looked empty. There were two small very uncomfortable chairs next to a small round table which was half covered by the minibar. No coffee table, no standard lamp, no shelves and no cushions on the third and unnecessary bed. As for the bathroom if this is contemporary it can only be to the 80s. A minute wash basin and cabinet, a newish small shower unit with a dangerously slippery floor and a ludicrous old fashioned triangular spa bath. The entrance to the Lodge is good and the biggest positive of our stay was two dinners in the Highland restaurant. That had been a weakness on our previous visit but the current chef is doing a good job. Breakfast was another matter. Almost mind blowing in its inefficiency. Plain tables - find your own cutlery and napkins. An acceptable buffet spread but no one tasked with making sure it was refreshed. At various times, no teaspoons, no spoons, no water glasses, no soft cheese, no scrambled eggs at the same time as there were no sausages and no tomatoes and two of the three selections of coffee pods not available. If you want tea it’s water from an urn into a cup but no saucers. Seriously understaffed and under trained. The Tavern has lost its atmosphere after a big extension has turned it into a cafe. Again understaffed, duties unclear and possibly the worst pub dinner we’ve ever had. The burger patties were unpleasant and came first, followed by soup. Apparently our fault for not telling the girl behind the bar which order to bring them in. What???? Infrastructure is decaying with large potholes in the road and part of the fascia of our cabin falling off. The property was put on the market eighteen months ago and does not appear to have sold which may explain the lack of desperately needed capital investment. And if the property is still managed by Peppers they need to send in a quality auditor immediately. The Cradle Mountain Lodge website mentions Elanor, the owners, but not Peppers but the Peppers website still includes the property. Having just stayed at the very high quality Peppers Silo, CML taints the brand badly.

Drunken offensive manager

We spent ten days on a holiday in Tasmania. This stay was the most expensive and least happy experience of all. First the accommadation was 'good' but the shower had no door and the bathroom flooded which is a hazard particularly for the elderly. We had amazing walks but this was not due to the lodge. We were initially met by happy staff willing to help. Our first encounter with dining was insulting and offensive at least. Firstly there is insufficient staff which means that if you only require ony a drink you wait in a long line of guests waiting to order a meal. The most offensive part of waiting for a meal was to sit by an intoxicated Manager of your establishment complaining about his staff in a loud tone. At this point of time I must state that Iam a retired Police Officer and I found him offensive. As he had more beers he then repeated his offensive language and it was at this point we had to leave. I would never recommend your resort to anyone. Tourists from overseas may think it is great to see our native animals but having witnessed you Manager animal we will never book in with you.

Consider Staying Outside of The Mountain

Having stayed at Cradle Mountain Lodge twice before and knowing it was a little dated we thought given the now Peppers branding we would be getting way better than what we got.. Very very disappointing when you expect a five star stay after reading all the hype about Peppers Cradle Mountain Lodge. We travelled with another couple and both of our spa cabins left a lot to be desired from creaking floors, noisy fridges, leaking shower and running toilet. Pictures make it look good until you actually stay in it. The food in the bar for lunch and dinner was quite nice. Unfortunately the staff were short on numbers and those that were working were under the pump meaning long waits to order food or drinks as both needed to be done at the bar with only one serving. Breakfast was included with our booking. Upon arrival we thought we were on the set of Faulty Towers. The poor staff didn’t know which way was up. The server took our coffee order and told us to sit wherever we liked, no numbers on tables, so we never saw our coffee. The person bringing our coffees didn’t know where to go. There was no fruit, no yoghurt, no bread, no clean plates, spoons, not much of anything really and when we asked they acknowledged us but continued to clean glasses. At one point I observed a chef come from the kitchen and speak angrily to a server, not a nice look. We finally ordered replacement coffees and after some twenty more minutes they arrived. Such a shambles in need of overseeing. The whole experience was very below par for such an establishment, and the prices were high with $679 per cabin with breakfast a complete rip off. On the positive side the location itself was great and the wildlife plentiful. Would highly recommend people look at options to stay outside the park in future rather than spend $$$ for very little. Actually Sheffield isn’t that far and a lovely place.

The communications from the Lodge are highly professional and positive. The reality is somewhat short of the image projected. The 90 units lack any outside sitting area, face South, and the tracks need an overhaul. Wi-Fi is available in the main building but not in the units. Staff are young, enthusiastic, helpful, but under-resourced and largely unsupervised. Breakfast was chaotic with coffees arriving late or not at all, food, crockery, and cutlery running out periodically. The quality of the experience is not commensurate with the price. The National Park experience was well organised and visual environment stunning.
