We recently stayed at the Mercure Launceston in a Deluxe King Room. While there were some positives, the room was not what we expected based on the room category we had booked and the photos advertised online. The room itself was very spacious, with a comfortable king bed, a sofa, table and a large bathroom. Although the bathroom was generous in size, it didn't include a bath, which may be worth noting for some guests. One positive worth mentioning is the free car parking, which was very convenient and appreciated. The hotel’s location is also reasonably close to the city centre, about a 10–12 minute walk, making it accessible but not quite central. Unfortunately, the biggest issue was the location and layout of the room. It was on the ground floor at the rear of the building, and it felt more like a basement than a deluxe room. There were only two very narrow, frosted windows, which let in almost no natural light, making the room feel dark throughout the day. The windows also couldn't be opened, so there was no fresh air or ventilation. Despite the room's generous size, it felt surprisingly claustrophobic because of the lack of light and airflow. The room also had a noticeable mouldy smell. We initially thought it might have just been us, but friends who visited our room independently commented on the same odour. To be honest, the room looked nothing like the photos online. We were so surprised when we arrived that we went back to reception to confirm we had actually been allocated the correct room type. While reception confirmed it was a Deluxe King Room, it certainly didn't reflect the room that had been advertised. Overall, the room was clean and spacious, but the lack of natural light, inability to ventilate the room, mouldy smell, and mismatch with the online photos significantly impacted our stay. I would recommend requesting a room with proper windows and natural light if staying here, as the room we received did not meet our expectations of a Deluxe King Room.
