I selected this hotel in the context of being an Accor Platinum card-holding independent traveller given to wandering the backwaters of Central and Eastern Europe. I arrived in Chisinau on the daily overnight train from Bucuresti and needed somewhere within convenient walking distance of the station that would give me early access to a room. An advance email request was promptly answered with an assurance that a room would be available for me on the Sunday morning of my arrival. This was a pleasant surprise as it might normally be expected to be the busiest morning of the week. My budget doesn't run to taxis and Chisinau is not strong on street information about using the otherwise excellent trolleybus system. Google maps took me on a challenging walk through a long pavement street market and finally delivered me at about 10.00. I later discovered a much simpler route, and better access information on the website would have been welcome. The hotel is actually very conveniently located in the fairly small city centre, with shops, bars and cafés in the immediate vicinity and bus stops and major public buildings within a few minutes' walk. There does not appear to be a car park, and I hope it stays that way. Chisinau does not need any more cars. The hotel was very quiet when I arrived but a warm, amusing and responsive receptionist was ready with my room card. In shameful contrast to my basic Romanian, her English was almost faultless. She was one of the several staff members whom I encountered during my two-day stay who had clearly been trained in high standards of customer care and satisfaction; another reason for making frequent use of the Accor brand. I was offered a large, well-furnished room on the second floor - the highest available at the time as the hotel transitions from having 19 to 74 rooms. One wall largely comprised windows, but only with a view of the adjacent construction site that is due to contain the remaining 55 rooms. Despite a southerly aspect and a pair of shallow oriels, it received very little direct light. The decoration was simple and understated, tastefully reflecting the hotel's 'jazz' theme which is also dramatically represented on the main staircase. As is happily is to be expected with Accor hotels, the bed was supremely comfortable, and everything was in good condition and spotlessly clean. The bathroom was large, arguably too large, with a basin bench at one end and towel hooks a few metres away at the other end. The basin was not equipped with a plug but fortunately the bidet sufficed for my modest daily laundry requirements. The absence of direct sunlight did slow down the drying process. This matters for non-business travellers on a budget. An expensive laundry service is not a realistic option when travelling for 60+ days a year. Breakfast was offered in a pair of rather dark rooms downstairs at what, on this hilly site, is actually street level. It was unexciting but adequate. The espresso did the the job very palatably but the cooked options were predictably uninspiring; perhaps I should have been there three hours earlier. The jug of water infused with lemon and fresh mint was a nice touch; a cheap and far superior alternative to fruit juice concentrates. The expanded hotel is on a very cramped site and it remains to be seen whether higher levels will offer more light and views, or any outdoor space. A terrace or roof garden would be very welcome additions. The pricing is surprising for one of the poorest countries in Europe. At 108€ per night (excluding breakfast), my Sunday and Monday night stays were the cheapest available within my fairly broad range of date options (and by far the most expensive in this visit to Hungary, Romania and Moldova), and in recent months some nights have been priced inexplicably in excess of 300€. This vastly exceeds prices being charged in comparable Eastern European cities. Were it not for my self-interested loyalty to the Accor brand there is little likelihood that I would return to pay those prices. However, a parting conversation with the FoH manager and two of her staff reinforced my belief that the nascent tourism industry in Moldova deserves the support of the privileged West. For as long as it avoids pricing itself out of the market, this hotel offers a very creditable contribution to achieving that growth. I unreservedly recommend it.
