Not a 4 Star Hotel

TripAdvisor rating 3.0/5

Lynn W TripAdvisor review

Not a 4 star hotel. The only positive is the location right near River and city central on opposite side of Yarra river. In walking distance of Melbourne Park for AO. Beautiful river walk. The hotel is mediocre at best. Small room. Plain Jane. Window shade broke. TV reception not great. Took 2 requests and over 6 hours to get a second luggage rack. No one at reception at night and never answer phone. No help with luggage. Cleaning staff don't attend to details. No washcloths left one night, no extra toilet paper roll another. Didn't take all trash. Buffet breakfast is mediocre at best. Minimal selections. Eggs ok. Waffles cold. Bread doesn't seem fresh. Coffee horrible (from machine) unless you pay extra at the barista bar. Reception associate also functions as the "cafe" bar server so if you need to speak with receptionist you may wait while they are fixing coffees. No fitness center. I would give this hotel 3 stars at best, especially after having just stayed at a 4 star in Sydney which seemed like a luxury hotel compared to this one.

We stayed for 4 night for our first Australian open experience, as a package I booked. The location was great, however the room we had was fine, the bathroom needed upgrading and the guest services needed a few calls for towels etc after they serviced the room. There is also no way room service as normal, have to go to reception to pick up your order. The bed however was super comfy, very clean and the buffet breakfast was great!

The check in process was very impersonal. While the process is automated it still required a staff member to process us at reception. There seemed to be an assumption that we had stayed before and already knew the various processes for parking etc (which we eventually figured our way through). For a nice hotel and at the rates being charged (the Australian Open was on at the time but that was not the reason for our travel) the service level fell well short.

Dear Steve, Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback. We appreciate your comments regarding our central location and are pleased to hear your booking experience was smooth. We’re sincerely sorry that your arrival and check-in experience felt impersonal and fell short of expectations. You are absolutely right that we should never assume guests are familiar with our processes, particularly regarding parking and hotel procedures. We apologise if our approach made you feel rushed or unwelcome, as this is not the level of service we aim to provide. We also regret the maintenance issue you experienced in the bathroom and the difficulty in reporting it due to limited reception availability. Additionally, we apologise that your ALL loyalty status was not recognised during your stay, which is certainly disappointing and not reflective of our commitment to valued members. Your feedback has been shared with our management team so we can address these concerns around service delivery, communication, maintenance, and member recognition. We truly appreciate your honesty, as it helps us improve. Kind regards, Tracey Mercure Melbourne Southbank
