I made a booking weeks in advance as my wife was attending the Hyrox Melbourne competition nearby. Having been an Accor All/Advantage Plus member for almost 20 years I utilised my membership and booked a room for the two of us for a weekend in Melbourne. Unfortunately when I selected the number of guests, I selected only one person when I made the booking. Two days before the arrival date, I received notification I had a roster change due to an unexpected operational requirement (I am a police officer and have my roster regularly changed). So I called ahead and asked if my wife could check in. It was at this moment I raised I made a mistake in booking. Although the staff I spoke to were sympathetic they indicated I couldn’t add my wife’s details on the booking and she couldn’t check in even after I explained the circumstances. They did suggest I contact the Accor All hotline to see if they were in a position to make the amendment as I had booked through the website. I contacted the Accor All hotline and the consultant replied that it was at the discretion of the hotel and they contacted Mantra Melbourne and was told that I could not change the booking and instead suggested I make a new booking to include my wife. I then asked if there was a spare room and I was told there were no vacancies. After I explaining that my wife needed rest for a competition and I may be arriving at worst case on Saturday morning, the Accor All consultant again asked Mantra Southbank and the reply I got was “sorry only you can get the keys, your wife has to wait for you to come.” At this point I made the decision to not take any chances and asked if there was vacancy at another hotel at Southbank which the Mercure was available. I made the booking and there were no issues with having my wife added with the authority to check in. As it turned out that was very lucky as I was tied up with an active police investigation and was not able to travel to Melbourne on the Friday night which if I had taken the risk at Mantra, she would have been sleeping on the street because of Mantra’s inflexibility. Whilst I am aware there are rules and I made the mistake of booking for one person, I would have thought having been an Accor member for over 20 years, there may have been some reward for loyalty, but Mantra’s inflexibility and insistence that my wife could not check in and suggest I book another room when there was none available indicates they didn’t want my business and has left a very bad taste in my mouth. And finally after not being able to use the room, Mantra Southbank sends multiple reminders to give a rating added salt to the wound. Had the Mercure Southbank not have come to the rescue I would have considered cancelling my Accor All membership but they did the right thing and saved the day. Mantra Southbank… well the less the said the better.
