It was overall a nice stay. We got a suite to celebrate our daughter’s birthday over there. The suite was really great, with two balconies, 2 big bathrooms. Two issues though: - my husband walked on pieces of glass near the kids pool the first day we arrived. He bled a lot. So he couldn’t go to the pool for two days and had to walk carefully with his injured foot. We were told that someone will contact us regarding this issue but nobody did. - we left the cake out for a short time and got ants everywhere! Mostly in the bedroom I was using. There were so many, that we had to ask the hotel to send someone to take care of them (which helped). The pools were great, and our daughter enjoyed the ice cream shop and “sand playground” for kids.

Everything was great except the internet was very spotty. Pretty important when you are there for a business meeting.

it was raining all of the trip, but it didn’t matter because the room and the amenities are absolutely amazing as well as the staff and the grounds.

5 Star Resort? Maybe in Afghanistan?

Wellness Center & Resort are not 5 Star anything anymore. The “Spa” is understaffed! There was no bottle of water given in locker. Jacuzzi tub still out of order, like 8 months now. Towel I received for sauna was paper thin, something you would get at a Holiday Inn Express. No attention to detail that made this 5 stars at some point. There was a ceiling light out in steam room and no treat given after receiving a massage. The Penny pinching continues to their customers while rates remain high! At the resort, same story! Huge beautiful flower arrangements in lobby are gone. No lemonade or wet towels given to arriving guests. Room is in disrepair and upgrades are past due for $800-1000 night. Went to lobby bar for a glass of wine and had to choose between a Fairmont cab at $32 glass or an Opus One glass at $190. This is a lobby bar, not South Beach. New owners have done away with all the little amenities that kept guests coming, now it's just a money grab until they sell in 2 years. Went to grab and go to pick up a coffee. 18% service fee added to bill plus workers have a tip jar! Chocolate covered Oreos guests used to receive for free during turndown service is now $3 plus 18% plus tax and tip! This will be my last visit. Grounds are beautiful but don’t appreciate the nickel and dining of guests!
Lost its luster

Have been a big fan as you can see in past reviews, but… it lost its luster. - No more self parking. Valet is $65/night plus all the tips if you use your car more frequently during your stay. With that it lost one of its competitive advantages. $65 for valet outside of the city: Insane. Plus: I simply prefer self parking. Faster. No one touches my car. Easy. Brought it up since we booked the stay before the changes were implemented: No one cared. All I heard was: Everything is getting more expensive in San Diego. In the meanwhile: The self parking lot sits there empty. - With that: If you go on a weekend, be prepared to wait for your car. Valet team was not able to handle the crowds and I ended up getting the car myself on two occasions. - Check in: Lady could not have been less welcoming. Put a dent into the experience right away. It was 3:20pm - told us room isn’t ready, check in is at 4. Got it, no problem. Clock turns 4 and room is still not ready. And now? Nothing she could do, she said, we’d have to wait. Ok, but you made a big deal out of the 4 o’clock mark and now… it’s 4:15. - Didn’t get turn down service a single night. No notification or anything either. - Additional bed was a disaster - flimsy and overused mattress, no proper bedding. But they charge $50/night. Not family friendly. - Had to wait for a table for breakfast for 22 minutes. Restaurant was empty. Workers were putting in new dimmers for the lights which impacted service. During peak time. Why? Lastly, I always give a hotel the opportunity to make up for any issues. Same this time. Guy at check out didn’t ask how the stay was, so I had to offer my thoughts awkwardly anyways. Mentioned everything in the nicest way possible. All I got was: “Oh, that’s disappointing. Anyways, here’s the bill.” He couldn’t have cared less. In short: With the service going downhill, rooms becoming tired, some of the staff being new and unfriendly, no more self park and a $65/night valet charge - now you might as well check out other properties close by or in the city. One positive: The food at Amaya is excellent.
