Better than might be expected in the Covid era!

TripAdvisor rating 4.0/5

Howard N 14/09/2020 TripAdvisor review

We stayed at the Mercure Walton Hall Hotel for two nights, mid-week, on a bed, breakfast and dinner basis. The most striking thing about our visit was the courtesy, good humour and excellent service provided by all the staff that we encounted. Although, some compromises had been made due to the constraints imposed because of Covid-19, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and every effort was made to provide the best possible experience for guests.

Staff were excellent

I was a bit disappointed as the picture advertised when you book makes you think you are staying in the hall. However, there is a large Travel Lodge type of building behind it. I did ask to upgrade but there was a wedding in the next day but the manager gave us a free bottle of bubbly with dinner as a goodwill gesture.

Nice stay peacefull location

Stayed for two nights. First thoughts were needs a little attention. Leather chair in room was ripped, balcony needed a bit of a clean, bottom bolt on balcony door was held on by a nail. Even though there was a few faults it was such a nice peaceful location it didn't matter. Had a lovely stay. Thankyou

Excellent - quality and value for money stay

I was difficult to find in the dark as road sign not lit up ended up in someones driveway with sat nav saying we'd reached our destination. Luckily they kindly directed us and we were the 2nd that evening, sounds like a regular occurrence for them which isn't good. Rooms were good although my mothers had a large walk in shower as requested but there was no handrail so couldn't use. We arrived fairly late and were only given 2 breakfast times either a 8am or 11am slot neither suited so had to get up early after a late night as 11am was after check out and nearly lunchtime. I would not of booked breakfast had i known. 1 comment on breakfast i appreciate it is difficult but it is very wasteful to bring everything out and not let us say there are certain things we can't eat as i did say i couldn't eat all the cooked breakfast but was told it didn't matter they'd bring it all out then was asked later if there was something wrong with it as i'd eaten very little. They weren't that busy in the restaurant to accommodate this.

Clean, spacious, relaxing

Only stayed one night but had one of the 2 bed apartments which was huge and perfectly clean. The restaurant and bar area were good, breakfast was good, the spa looked great although we didn't get time to use it. Lovely grounds, really recommend.

nice location, but let down by service

area is nice but room was dirty as was linen. Rooms were not serviced and minimal staff meant that calls to both front desk and spa went unanswered for 4hrs+ so had to go there in person (not great when you need new towels, toilet roll or to book breakfast) . Breakfast was awful and by no means worth the money and time slots where hard to get and always booked as was the pool and spa amenities

Set in beautiful, historic grounds

We arrived late to book in, 9.30pm and did have to wait a while to attract attention for checking in but after that we received excellent and friendly attention from all staff. The room was enormous and everywhere was clean and well cared for. The grounds are extensive and allowed for a lovely, interesting stroll after breakfast. When enquiring about the history of Walton Hall we were delighted to be given printed information.

We stayed for 2 nights as a family in both the one bedroom apartment and a double classic room. Both were clean and to a good standard. The hotel staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help us make our stay welcoming. The swimming pool, dining room, bar and courtyard facilities were all well presented. Breakfast even under Corvid-19 restrictions was well organised and served with a smile.

Fabulous place, fabulous value and lovely staff

Jay B. Families - 08/09/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

We stayed overnight with family (after a great day at Hatton Locks) and we were given two rooms in the old hall which were fabulous. We think they must have been recently refurbished? They were clean, spacious and very grand. Bed was enormous and soooo comfy! We had a fantastic deal so no complaints but I should say that the restaurant meal didn't match the standard of the room. For the price we paid, it was absolutely fine but if you're after fine dining, good decor and a variety of choice on the menu, this wouldn't be a recommendation, but otherwise, it all worked. It enabled us to see family after way too long. The hotel has clear social distancing and Covid-19 best practice guidelines (although not all guests were wearing masks where they should have been... but it's the guests who should be pulled up for that, not the staff who aren't the police). Staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. I admit, I was not expecting greatness after reading some of the August 2020 (ie post re-opening) reviews, but this is why I particularly wanted to leave a review myself. I wonder/ hope if there were a few teething problems after the re-opening, but it would seem to me, that these have been ironed out, now. Thoroughly recommended.

Lovely location, minimum service

Lovely hotel and grounds but food service/quality poor. The restricted menu with everything £15 was disgraceful as we had chicken tikka which was clearly a microwave meal. Break was not the same every day and kitchen had little or no bread. Waiters seemed to forget what you asked for and when complaining staff were not bothered. No housekeeping due to Covid and with all this I think discounts should be offered - especially for people who at least kept their bookings from months ago. Dissapointed.

Shower broken

TripAdvisor rating 4.0/5

Shahlakarkouti 26/08/2020 TripAdvisor review

Service in restaurant and bar was good, not great food, breakfast was awful, a packed lunch! Reception compensated us only 10% of the bill because none of us were able to shower. It was broken! Swimming pool was nice and warm but facilities very dated.

Thank you for your comments, all feedback is used to assist us in improving the service and when we can we will ensure that breakfast is put back on as normal (or as near to normal as the guidelines allow). Please accept my apologies for the broken shower and any disappointment caused due to your comments. Kind regards Joanne

Should have gone to Premier Inn

Janet G 18/08/2020 TripAdvisor review

I would not recommend staying until things are totally back to normal. We stayed 3nights and yes we were told that were some changes on cleaning routines however having requested a fan when we checked in and despite a second request I was told there was one at reception I could have, so had to fetch it myself. We requested clean towels for the next day, none were forthcoming so had to approach a cleaner that I was lucky enough to see and get some from her. Same thing for toilet rolls.Leisure facillities only the pool and gym were open with the pool limited to 13 people in hour slots , The pool is not the biggest so when I counted 16 it was time to get out. You can eat there but menu is VERY limited. We have stopped here about 8 years ago but taking Covid into account the standards has slipped immensly

Dear Janet, thank you for your review. As you would be aware the rooms are not serviced during your stay and all refreshed amenities are on request. I am sorry that you found this to be an inconvenience, we are currently working on how we can anticipate these needs and deliver the right things to the rooms before asked and without knowing what you have used. The aim is to not enter your room once it has been occupied to keep our team safe. All current changes to the standards are in place to ensure the safety of our guests and staff. The recommended capacity for our pool is 26, our local hotel policy has been to reduce that by 50% as it seemed to full. i am sorry it went over to 16 whilst you were in the pool efforts will be made to ensure the guests respect the rules in place at the moment. Please accept my apologies that you did not enjoy you experience, i hope you will return in the future to find everything as it was. Kind regards Joanne

First post lockdown escape

MeandGary 12/08/2020 TripAdvisor review

I wasn't sure what to expect as we really hadn't been out even for meals since lockdown. I don't know why I worried everything felt so safe and organised, QR codes to scan for info everywhere. Social distancing everywhere and found guests all really respected the rules. The hotel is set is so much land that we ventured for walks and soaked ip the sun watching the world go by. Yes the menu was a bit limited but enough choice for a couple of days and how lovely was it to be looked after after months of cooking and cleaning! Well done team, we cant wait to return and thank you for looking after us!

Dear You and Gary, thank you for your 5 star review, how wonderful to read your kind words. The team and I are so pleased you enjoyed your first get away. We would be really grateful if you could bring the sun back next time you come though! Its seems to have rained since you left. I look forward to welcoming you back soon, Kind regards Joanne

Tired and Dirty

Was hugely disappointed with the hotel. Our room was nice but the communal areas were tired and dirty. Unfortunately we saw a dozen rats running around and whilst I appreciate the hotel is rural, the rats were right outside our bedroom, and in the car park.

Dear Lisa R., I am extremly sorry and disapointed that we have not met your expectations on his occasion. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the mater with you further, if so please contact me directly at the hotel. Best regards Oliver Wortley Operations Manager 01…24

Regularly stay as the staff are friendly, the rooms are comfortable in a quiet area nice for walks and evening runs. Also fitness centre is good for a basic workout after work.

Dear Alwyn P., Thank you for positive comments, it is particularly pleasing to learn that the team have made you feel so welcome and you have made the most of the grounds at Walton hall. I hope we have the pleasure of looking after you in the near future. Best regards Oliver Wortley Operations Manager 01…24

Amy H. Couples - 23/03/2020 Confirmed reviews ALL

Rooms needed upgrading but they were clean and really big size. We had a suite which had a massive living room and a Nespresso machine. Breakfast and dinner was great in hotel and located within a good distance of most attractions.

Dear Amy H., Thank you so much for your kind words and taking the time to share your valued feedback. I will be sure to share your positive coments with he team. I hope you will choose to visit Walton Hall again soon. Best regards Oliver Wortley Operations Manager 01…24
