Better to reserve upon arrival

We asked about their special sign and the front desk people said that only applied to the current night and I reserved online. Next day, the special was still there, and they didn't want to validate it on my reservation and my reservation was more expensive. I think my recommendation is simply to go to the front desk the day anyone wants to stay and reserve the night the special is advertised on the entrance. Ahhh also, uncomfortable beds. But it's good for backpackers.
