I stayed at Novotel Chennai over the weekend and, as an Accor member who stays at multiple hotels through the year, I genuinely did not expect such a disappointing experience. From the moment I checked in, something felt off. The reception team seemed completely uninterested not one smile, no warmth, no hospitality. Even though I arrived after the check-in time, I was asked to wait because “the server was down”. Fine, things happen. But the attitude that came with it was what set the tone. When I entered the room, the basics weren’t in place. – The TV wasn’t working. – No hand towels. – No toilet paper. All small things, but together it painted a picture of a hotel not paying attention to essentials. Later in the evening, I headed to the rooftop pool at around 5 pm which I’d assume is a normal time for guests to take a swim on a weekend. The pool was being cleaned and I had to wait 30 to 45 minutes, so what was supposed to be a daylight swim turned into a dusk swim. Again, timing and planning felt completely off. Dinner was the biggest letdown and showed how poorly the property is being run. We reached the restaurant at around 7:15 pm. The buffet was laid out, but not a single dish had a nameplate. Not one. We had no idea what was vegetarian or non-vegetarian. After asking the staff twice, the manager stepped in and got things moving, but it still took 20 to 25 minutes before plates were labelled. Nobody informed us when it was ready and they knew we were waiting. When we finally started eating, the starters were completely cold. Both veg and non-veg. This was surprising because we were literally there at the start of the buffet time. The food sitting on hot plates was still cold. I lost my appetite at that point. To give credit where it’s due, the restaurant manager (Ani or Avi — I may have got the name wrong) was the only person who seemed to care. He got fresh starters made for us, twice, and was genuinely hospitable in his approach. But he was fighting a losing battle with an uninterested team around him. Room service later that night was similar the orange we asked to be cut for a cocktail was sliced the wrong way even though we had specified it. Again, Santosh from in-room dining was the only other staff member who was actually warm, smiling, and reassuring. He offered to get me a new orange and redo it properly, and his hospitality stood out. At checkout, the lack of interest continued. The person who came to take our luggage looked like he was doing it unwillingly. I handed over the valet card early so the car could be brought by the time we checked out. We finished the formalities, waited, and the car was still not there. Only when I asked did the valet guy run to get it. And the reception staff, despite seeing this, didn’t bother to apologise or even acknowledge the delay. By the end of the stay, it became a running joke between us that maybe Novotel Chennai trains staff to not smile, because out of everyone we interacted with, only two people Ani and Santosh showed genuine hospitality. Everyone else seemed disconnected, disinterested, and honestly tired of doing their job. I don’t usually write detailed reviews, but this experience forced me to. A hotel stay, especially a weekend staycation, is supposed to help you relax and switch off. Instead, this was stressful and disappointing. I’ve stayed at multiple Novotel properties before and have had good experiences. But I would not return to Novotel Chennai again, and would not recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable or well-run hotel experience.
