As a loyal Accor member who stays 3-5 different hotels a month, I was not disappointed with my first hotel choice for this trip. The tallest Kunming hotel offers amazing rooms with spectacular unblocked views all around. Though it is not in the city core for the main attractions, a quick 10-15 mins Didi ride does the trick. The Executive Lounge staff were attentive and very friendly, especially Daisy and Ning. Food options remain largely the same for the evening service so if they could rotate the menu a bit, it would be much better. I look forward to returning end of this week for another great stay!

Overall, my stay fell well below expectations. As an Accor Platinum member who frequently stays at Sofitel properties around the world, I found it difficult to consider this hotel up to the standards I normally associate with the Sofitel brand. One of the most disappointing aspects was the attitude of some of the staff. During working hours, several employees seemed more focused on their mobile phones than on the guests around them. I noticed this both in the breakfast restaurant and with the bell staff in the lobby. They were so absorbed in their phones that they often seemed unaware of what guests were doing or whether anyone needed assistance. I was genuinely surprised to see this at a Sofitel. I would also like to point out an issue with the breakfast. More than 80% of the selection consisted of Chinese dishes, leaving very few options for international guests like myself. The overall variety and quality of the breakfast were also below what I would expect from a hotel of this level. Finally, although the hotel is only around ten years old, the property looks and feels as though it has been operating for twenty or even thirty years. The facilities and interiors appear considerably more aged and worn than I expected. Overall, this was a surprisingly disappointing Sofitel experience and certainly not the level of stay I have come to expect from the brand.

Outstanding hotel in terms of height, faciilties starting to age with an Eastern diverse breakfast selection

Although the hotel furnishing was dated, the cleaning was well done and made the stay very comfortable. Service by the staff at the executive lounge the doorman was great. Also special call out to Jayson on night shift on 4 September who went out of his way to help us coordinate with our local tour guide even after his shift had ended to ensure our trip went smoothly.

Breakfast service is not good - with broken glass on the floor and it takes over 20 minutes to find a person to clean up

I have stayed at Sofitel hotels around the world, and this was by far one of the most disappointing experiences I have ever had with the brand. When I first arrived at Sofitel Kunming by taxi, I had several heavy suitcases. The doorman was standing right in front of the entrance and clearly saw me struggling to take my luggage out of the taxi. I even tried to get his attention several times, and we made eye contact. Yet he simply stood there and watched until I managed to take the heavy suitcase out myself. At first, I assumed this was just an individual employee’s mistake and did not think much of it. However, two days later, when I checked out, the exact same thing happened again. There was a different, older doorman this time. I was struggling with my heavy luggage while trying to get into a taxi, and once again, the doorman was watching me. Despite making eye contact, he made absolutely no effort to help load my luggage into the taxi. What makes this particularly disappointing is that this happened at both check-in and check-out, and with two completely different doormen. This makes it difficult to believe that it was simply one employee’s personal attitude. It seems that basic guest assistance at the hotel entrance is simply not being properly managed or expected. Helping a guest with heavy luggage is not an extraordinary request at a five-star hotel. It is one of the most basic responsibilities of the doorman team. I have stayed at Sofitel properties in many different countries, and I have never experienced anything like this before. It may seem like a small issue, but unfortunately, this was the experience that stayed with me most from my two-night stay at Sofitel Kunming. A five-star hotel is not judged only by its rooms or facilities. It is also judged by how guests are treated at the very first and very last moment of their stay. In this case, Sofitel Kunming failed at both.

My room and hotel location is excellent, thanks so much Sofitel Kunming team for upgrading my room); the view is excellent overlooking the lake and beautiful sunrise view of Kunming City, the bathtub is a real treat. Sofitel is also located nearby Kunming Railway station. pedestrial street and also large Joy World shopping mall. What made my stay exceptional is the service, in particular, Mr Wang whose warm welcome and meticulous service made my stay truly exception!

I arrived late on the 16th - August and was given room 3706 but when I went up, my key card didn’t open the door, the bellman was right behind and showed up. He opened the door with his master key but we saw luggage in the hallway of room 3706. Apparently there was a guest still in the room. I was subsequently assigned to room 3705 and well maintained during my stay. A few of staff where our group had breakfast were polite.

Breakfast was the weakest part of an otherwise 5-star stay. The spread leaned heavily on local deep-fried items, with insufficient international options — no fresh toast/bread station. There were 3–4 salad dressing options, but most were mayonnaise-based; due to my diet, the only one I could use was the oil-and-vinegar option, and it turned out to be spicy, leaving no plain dressing suitable for me. Compared to other Sofitel properties I've stayed at (Guangzhou, Shanghai Hongqiao), the breakfast quality here fell noticeably short — I'd rate it around 2 stars against a property that is otherwise 5 stars in every other respect (rooms, pool, location, service). Would appreciate a broader Western/international selection and a plain, non-spicy oil-and-vinegar dressing option to match Sofitel's standard elsewhere.

The hotel has the best receptionist

Generally this hotel has a clean room, nice city view, comfortable bed and pillows. They have nice shower, good amenities, and excellent services There are 2 downside that need to be improve. 1. Air conditioning system in the room is bad. It won’t get colder and during my stay, it was humid and rainy. I tried to adjust the temperature many times after midnight with no better results. This is making my stay uncomfortable. Our groups of 12 people booked many rooms (4 from my own team and 5 more from other team), we experienced the same results. 2. Lack of meat selection during the breakfast, egg station is slow and lack of basic egg selection (such as poaches egg, egg Benedict) that can be found in other Accor properties. The fried egg or scramble egg must be on request and very slow (my request was denied once as the cooking staffs were busy with fried tomatoes). The breads and croissants quality are below other Sofitel or even Novotel in other cities. The pork sausage quality is not up to the standard. The meat is salty and tough. The sauce and butter selection are limited.

As a devoted Accor loyalist this year, I was genuinely excited to finally experience the Sofitel brand for the first time. Unfortunately, this stay left me a little heartbroken, as it didn't quite live up to the expectations I've come to associate with Accor properties. To start, communication with the front desk staff was a challenge, which made simple requests feel more difficult than they should have been. The air conditioning was also underperforming, though this alone was something we could look past in the interest of enjoying our stay. What was truly hard to accept, however, was experiencing a power outage on our final day that lasted almost half a day. A brief interruption of a few minutes would have been completely understandable, but an outage stretching for hours at a five-star property is difficult to overlook. As someone who deeply values the Accor family of brands, I had hoped my introduction to Sofitel would reflect the same standard of excellence I've enjoyed elsewhere in the group. Sadly, this first impression fell short of that bar.

Booked 1 day for tour of city, ended extending 6 more days and invited a family member to check out of Sheraton and join me for the additional 6 days! That’s thanks to Amy zhou? Very professional and helpful!
