Appalling Stay, Blocked drain in Shower flooded the bedroom disaster

We checked in to our room to find it was on 2nd floor not top floor as before and it was a disabled access bathroom. We went to reception and Amanda? told us we had ordered an accessible room. She was very abrupt with us. I was upset and furious, I told her that my deceased first wife was disabled and that we had to stay in that type of room in the past, and I 100% would not have book an accessible room as it brings back to many distressing memories of my deceased wife using the facilities and shower commode/ seat. The receptionist was adamant in telling me in front of other checking in guests that I had booked an accessible room, and anyway the hotel was full, there were no other rooms available. She made me doubt myself and feel stupid in front of the other guests. So I had no options to move. Later on a member of staff told me there were rooms across the hall available, so why did reception lie? My new wife, Joanne, stayed with your hotel in September 2023 and had a great stay and that was only reason she convinced me to stay there again. I note in the feedback that another guest on 08-07-2024 had exactly the same issue, receptionist telling guests they had booked accessible rooms when they hadn't. This is obviously a regular thing to push unsuspecting guests into accessible rooms when busy. The thing that disgusted me most was that guests who needed an accessible room were not able to use it when the hotel put guests who did not request it or ask for it are put in those type of rooms. I had a shower to freshen up after my wife and noticed the water was not draining away and pooling. When I opened the bathroom door to ask my wife to check it, the water spilled out onto the carpet soaking the carpet, about 2 square meters worth, not just over the room divider. I called front desk and a helpful man came up and used a carpet vacuum to get the water sucked up. He was very apologetic, saying house keeping are meant to check the drains weekly, but it clearly hadn't been done in a long time. He told us to leave the window open all night to help the carpet dry. The carpet was still wet to walk on and the wet room style of the bathroom meant that if you went to the bathroom vanity or toilet you walked on a wet floor which is a slip hazard, it also meant your feet were wet and had to dry them with a towel before going into bed. This was ridiculous for a supposed 3 star hotel. The best thing about the hotel was Vicky who I thought was in housekeeping, but I see from reviews she was also complimented by many guests who had issues and she is from guest services. She brought more towels as ours had been used to dry the floor. Our room service arrived shortly afterwards 2 meals on a tray. I asked if there was a folding table that we could eat our dinner from and the young man said no, so we had to eat our meal on our laps. There was a coffee table in the room ,but no table suitable to have a meal at. Most decent hotels have room service on a wheeled trolley with a hot box for the food and the sides lift up to make a table, but not here. Not even salt and pepper for our food. After that we ran out of toilet paper on the roll and as there was no fresh ones anywhere we had to call reception again for more. Such basic basic things that the hotel couldn't get right. I did hear from a member of staff that she has had this situation several times before that if the superior room is not available they sell the accessible room, and it's not at all clear on the form that it's an accessible room. Infact on the booking site you see photos of both the superior room with the outdoor balcony and also the room we had which was just a bay window. They also sneakily just show you a shower head and some shampoo not the whole bathroom, however most people would assume safely that it was a standard bathroom, as it was not showing the whole bathroom. If you saw the emergency pull cords and showering seat and grip rails around the toilet with no seat lid you would not book it. As if things couldn't get any worse at 3am the toilet handle wouldn't work to allow it to flush so my wife called reception and a guy came up and fixed it. Imagine the embarrassment of having someone member of staff having to come and fix the toilet handle after you have used the toilet. This is not acceptable. He assured my wife who was tired and infuriated by the litany of issues that the manager would call her in the morning. You can imagine, we are still waiting on that promised call. As a result of being told to leave the windows open to let the carpet dry instead of a peaceful nights sleep we were kept awake by emergency services sirens, people singing and arguing on way home from the clubs from 1am to 3am and then again to the sound of the Marks and Spenser's truck unloading dozens of trolleys of supplies from 6am until 7.45am on Sunday morning. Not a good night sleep at all. Further the Wi-Fi was useless and I see 3 other comments last week reporting the same. I called reception and they said they would reboot the modems... if they did, it made no difference. Good Wi-Fi in hotels is not difficult and is taken as a basic part of any accommodation in the Uk. In the morning the silver box of Kleenex tissues ran out, I didn't bother calling reception, we were both so over our stay. There must have only been about 5 tissues in the box and no spares anywhere. Breakfast was uneventful. On checking out the receptionist asked if we enjoyed our stay. I told her it was a disaster, she didn't look surprised. She asked about the issues, so I told her and she gave me the managers business card Myra McKillop to email. No apology, no offer of a financial compensation for our stay at all. Totally unacceptable. I only stayed there as my wife had a great stay last time and it was our last night in Scotland after a 3 week trip around the country before flying back to Australia where we live. This is not good enough Mercure Accor Group. If you as an organization had any respect, you would have contacted me before now to discuss it with me. I look forward to your response.

Perfect location for the station and everything in central Edinburgh. We asked for a room with a view, and on the 6th floor overlooking Princes street gardens we got just that we had before us Castle, galleries etc it was was brilliant. The staff were all very nice and the food was great. If I was to give negative points it would be you can hear the trams running early in the morning and to reduce the noise with the windows closed it got quite hot and stuffy in the room. It’s not cheap but nowhere in central Edinburgh is, but would definitely stay again.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your feedback. We’re delighted you enjoyed the perfect location, stunning views, and the service from our staff. We appreciate your comments regarding the noise and room temperature. To address this, we are planning to install air conditioning in all rooms, which should resolve these issues for future stays. We look forward to welcoming you back.
