I’ll start by saying that the superb location tends to make the review through rose tinted glasses. Our room was on the 4th floor and faced the Scott Monument and the Castle - an excellent view, and a perfect location. Very hot weather meant that the windows were open and Princess Street is busy nearly all day and night. A loose and noisy manhole cover didn’t help but that’s not the hotel’s fault. The room was very tired but comfortable. There were holes in the side of the bed, the carpet was dirty in parts and the fittings had all seen better days. That said, the towels and bedding were clean and fresh and the beds comfortable. Don’t expect the WiFi to reach your room - it doesn’t which was a bit annoying. There was a free safe in the room, but no air on. We had no problem with the towel rail as described in an earlier review. The breakfast was plentiful, good quality and a wide selection. Both drinks dispensers were broken and replaced by a tub of instant coffee and flasks of hot water. If this hotel were further away from the centre, we wouldn’t stay here again but the location and the view makes you look beyond the tired condition. I would definitely stay here again.
Be clear about what you are paying for and be prepared for a very hot bathroom

I don’t like giving negative reviews but …. Stayed 17 - 21st July. On booking through Mercure website I paid extra for an upgraded privilege room “many” of which, according to the website, have views of the castle. I then requested one of the castle view rooms (I booked well in advance and stayed Sun - Thurs) and was told that would be an additional £15 per night. When I questioned this I was told I could have a castle view room at no extra cost. Reception then tried to charge me this on check in and, I subsequently noticed, £60 had been deducted from my card after we checked out. This was refunded after I challenged it. Our stay coincided with record breaking temperatures in Scotland. We were already aware the rooms did not have air conditioning and appreciated the fan provided. What was unacceptable, on so many levels, was that the bathroom towel rail was scorchingly hot 24x7 and, we were told, could not be turned down or off. Despite keeping the bathroom door firmly shut at all times and the rail covered in towels the bathroom was unbearably hot and we spent as little time in there as possible. I have since raised both issues with the hotel and Accor, of which the hotel is a member, but, to date , I have not had a response. The location and condition of the rooms have been well covered by other reviews

This is an older hotel that is well maintained and has a perfect location for those wishing to visit the Old town. The rooms are small, but very comfortable. The location is close the the Royal Mile. Everything is within a short walk. Public transportation is located nearby.
Located in the very center, but…….

This place really needs a renovation. I have the impression that people working there are doing their best but it must be hard. The chair in the room was too much. There is no fridge. They told me I got an upgrade for my room I wonder how it would have been without. I had no view. Unfortunately I wanted to stay three days but I had to leave one day before. I can understand that they didn’t pay any money back but still I think they could have been a little bit nicer telling me that. I have been in several mercure hotels in the last weeks and this was really the worst. But I must admit that it is located at a very very good place. Train station in Airport bus are really very close.
A very disappointing stay

On arrival rooms were not ready until nearly 4 o’clock where check in us at 3. Rooms were very tired shabby and unkept with lots are stains on carpets missing material on a very dirty sofa. Bathroom was cleanliness was not up to standard with broken bath panel and dirty mould around the bath. Rude staff in the restaurant on Friday evening.
