Tired and lack of action to fix problems

First the positives, the staff were all very friendly and breakfast was fine. The negatives, the property is very tired (like our shower control almost falling off in our hands etc) and it appears that Mercure are running it down gradually vs. redeveloping. The staff were trying, but obviously lacked experience or enough hands on deck. When we arrived my daughter's bed (for our family room that is actually a camp bed) was not in our room and it took over 1.5 hours to sort out the issue; while we waited in reception. Then in the night the camp bed springs started to fall out so it became too unconformable to use, after our long delay to get any bed upon arrival, we replaced the springs ourselves and struggled on for one more night. The same thing happened so we had to stop using it. We asked the next morning to resolve the issue fully, but when we returned in the evening it had not been touched. We had to complain again and it was finally resolved. When we left we wanted to talk to the manager. They were not available and the receptionist gave their card. My wife rang and emailed several times to complain/discuss our experiences, but no response was received. Very disappointing. I would avoid, as despite the friendly staff the lack of responsiveness to our issues is totally unacceptable. A shame as the location is good. I will not give a terrible rating as the hotel didn't spoil the overall enjoyment of our trip to Leeds, but "poor" is pretty generous I feel.

Comfortable beds. No air con! Spacious rooms but need renovation. Stains on carpets. Kind and friendly staff but very slow food service. Generous breakfast spread.

We had a family room for 2 adults and 1 child booked from Thurs 15th-Sun 18th July 2021. Under the name Dr Rorie O. - room 127. On our arrival we noticed that there was only a double bed in the room. We went to raise this with the reception who assured me it was a ‘family room’ and that they would put a camp bed in the room. I questioned that shouldn’t a family room have a proper single bed in the room too not an additional make shift camp bed but they say that’s all they could do. We had to wait in the lounge for over an hour with my young daughter. It was nearly 9.45pm by the time we went back into the room and I was not happy at how flimsy the camp bed was. However, because it was so late didn’t want to wait another hour for them to try and improve the situation. My daughter didn’t have a good sleep at all and in-fact three springs had sprung off the bed and she was sleeping in a well and a big dip, feeling all the rods underneath her. I have photos that I will forward to you. After reattaching the springs for the 2 nd night and after another very unsatisfactory sleep (In which my husband had to sleep in the camp bed so my daughter could share the proper bed and have a decent sleep) we complained again. This time they put in a better camp bed for the 3rd night. That evening I questioned another member of staff if room 127 was a family room and shouldn’t a family room have a proper bed and the staff member agreed with me saying it was the usual standards. I said that evening could we talk to the manager and on the morning of check out on Sun 18th they said wait in the lounge and you’ll come to us. We waited and waited and of course no manager arrived. There was no apology about it. My husband and I realise you were very understaffed but standards like the milk being in the room being out of date and the shower control nearly fell off as we turned the shower on and off, was very poor. The room was also not cleaned to a very high standard.

1. We booked an accessible room clearly stated on booking confirmation. Hotel didn't have us down for an accessible room. Manager sat is down with pot of tea and went off and went off to resolve the problem in a calm and efficient manner. 2. Hotel looked tired and in need of some TLC. 3. It appeared there was a shortage of staff as tables in the lounge areas were unattended. 4. There was 2 weddings in the hotel on the Saturday and many guests were not wearing face masks. 5. Breakfast was very good. Wide range of choice. Dinner choice not so good.

Our stay was very disappointing and short-lived as they couldn’t provide a cot for our two month old even though we had requested one five weeks earlier when we booked. This resulted in us having to find last minute alternative accommodation. Some may say we could have co-slept, however, the rooms don’t have air con and it was 27 degrees in the midst of a week/10 days of extremely hot weather, co-sleeping could have resulted in overheating and death. When we finally found the room (we were wrongly directed) the door handle/key card was loose and almost hanging off the door. The cabinet facings in the bathroom were hanging off and the Lino was peeling off the floor. I have no problem with things being dated but it was in need of some serious repairs. Finally, the website claims that the hotel is family friendly but the restaurant doesn’t open until 6pm, which means that realistically we wouldn’t be eating until 6:30pm, given time to order and prepare the food. Our 4 year old eats dinner about 5:30 so we tried to book for 5pm but were told it wasn’t possible. This is not family friendly. Finally, when we then chose to order from the lounge menu (no kids section) the bar claimed that they didn’t have any bottles of water. I understand it was an exceptionally hot day, however, surely this would required there to be more water available. All of this happened but no staff seemed that bothered and there was no help from management. All I can say is that I had regretfully encouraged my wife to chose a Mercure as I’ve had previously positive experiences but this has completed changed my view of this group of hotels.

I requested a privileged room specifically for the robes and slippers which upon arrival we did not have. I requested a bottle of champagne to be added to the room as my partner and I was celebrating. We didn't receive this either, and as it was a suprise I didn't mention it to the desk. The shower wasn't easily adjustable as it was built into the wall, and my partner was too tall for the shower as the shower head only reached his chest. After we checked out, we received a call later stating we still owed money on our room. Even though we paid our room bill at check in. The bottle of champagne was never received yet they still required us to pay for it. It took 5 separate phone call conversations to eventually rectify this situation. However, after finding out that room service put the bottle of champagne in someone else's room. They then requested further payment for the room (which was not mentioned before in previous calls and we had paid for at check in). Eventually they found our card payment on our system and the matter was put to rest after requesting I send proof of payment that I was never given. Overall, the staff seemed disorganised and unable to communicate with one another. Rooms were fairly clean and the walking trails surrounding were lovely. However I will not stay again.

The staff were helpful overall but the hotel is in desperate need of updating. The bathroom floor tiles were cracked, meaning we had to wear shoes in there to avoid cutting our feet. There was a bad smell of damp from the bathroom. We had 1 towel. The heating was on full blast and the windows wide open. There was no dairy alternative for milk with breakfast, which is very poor in this day and age.

The hotel in general was good however the room was dirty, bathroom was dusty, bath full of dead files, the floor needed cleaning as did the patio doors and the bedside tables and desk which really were unclean unwiped. Even the remote control for the TV was disgusting full of brown dirt and hair. I cleaned around myself with antibacterial wipes as we had our 4 year with us. Should not need to clean a room on arrival.

The rooms were very tired and dated with peeling wallpaper, 90’s decor and a rather unpleasant smell about the whole room, especially the bathroom. I could have lived with that if the room had been less than £50 for the night and close to shops and eateries…. But it was none of those.

Tv did not work. I asked at 8:45 for it to be mended and at 21:00 someone called the room to ask if it was ok to mend it now. Cleaning substandard. Dirty cutlery left in room after clean. Several other irritations. Staff helpful, except for one man who when I asked if I could have some salad with my pizza room service just snapped no. Room service pizza cold Hot chocolate and marshmallows came without a spoon etc.

Visited for my birthday weekend with my husband We were met by a very friendly receptionist. In the room they had left prosecco and balloons which was lovely. We had our evening meal at the hotel and it was very nice. At breakfast the following morning the buffet was ok with reasonable choice. However the coffee was undrinkable! The following morning I asked for poached egg on toast which was lovely. I informed him that the coffee was horrible and asked if I could have one from the bar. He said no one else had disliked it. Two other people heard me and said to me that they were unable to drink it either but like me on my 1st morning hadn’t said anything. So all in all a lovely stay shame about the coffee !!
