This was perhaps my fourth stay at Eastgate. The hotel remains reliable and convenient for historic Oxford. Friendly and helpful staff both at the reception and in the restaurant.

Disappointing stay

I have being staying at this hotel for almost half decade. The disappointing issue is the room are not very clean and if you don’t ask for the room to be refreshed it won’t be done. I was told at reception that I don’t need to ask and rooms are automatically refreshed every day. To my surprise, it’s not the case. For the price we pay, I believe the hotel should treat their customers much better.

Very little that was good about the stay

Parking was the first problem. I was told to park in a space so small i couldn't get out of the car; i gave up and drove off; only when we came back 30 minutes later having not been able to park anywhere in Oxford were we given help getting into the ridiculously small car park. We were then checked into the wrong room, so when we entered the room someone else's luggage and food were in there. We tried ringing reception. no reply. we carried our bags back down 3 flights of stairs. The guy on desk obviously knew he'd made a mistake but there was no apology until right at the end when he said 'sorry about that. No offer to carry out bags back up or anything. Our package involved a free bottle of wine; we asked if they would upgrade to a prosecco for the hassle but was told groupon bought it so the hotel couldn't honour that. Charming. The room was dirty with old furniture. There were white stains on the dresser and coffee splashes over the ceiling. We tried calling reception later in the evening to see if there was room service as the bar shut so early, but there wasn't. We couldn't even get any more biscuits. We even contemplated going out in our pyjamas to the food van out in the street. So in summary tired, old hotel; some unhelpful staff, dirty and lacking in services and facilities that you would expect at the price paid. Additionally i phoned to say I had left my charger and could i pay postage for you to return it. I was told that was against company policy but i could arrange for my own courier to come and collect it! Can you see how ridiculous that is? I asked if the manager could call me and was told he would phone me the next day. Needless to say, noone bothered phoning me. I have left reviews saying all of this on the major review sites and will talk about my experience to anyone looking to book a hotel in Oxford. For a manager not to bother calling when someone has had this experience shows a complete lack of care about customers.

A mixed experience

My wife and I have stayed at the Eastgate four times before and looked forward to returning. On arrival at 8:30 pm we were told the elevator was out of service but would be fixed the next day. We were given a "privileged" room on the third floor and were told that someone would bring our luggage up. After eating dinner we returned to find our luggage still in the lobby. I brought it up myself. Next day the elevator was not fixed but would be "tomorrow". And it was-but we were never told that the elevator only goes to the second floor! This was mishandled from the start. We should have ben given a room on a low floor and some compensation should have been offered. That was the very negative part of our stay. On the positive side our room was good, the location is great, and our dealings with the staff on another matter were handled in a very helpful manner. We will return

Slight problem from the start - the reception had no record of our booking. Seemed to be expecting us on the same dates in October. However if you refer to your booking reference:- Transaction ID: A18…10… you will note that it is for 14th -15th September. As you didn't seem to have any record of this you dealt with the matter most courteously and offered us another room. This was across the courtyard and designed as a room for a disabled customer. Otherwise our stay with you was fine, and we were very well looked after.
