Great location at the end of the high street. Comfortable bed. Major downfall was cleanliness, bathroom mouldy and foul smelling, dirty glasses left in hallways, bedroom incredibly dusty in new building. Staff on reception Weren't particularly friendly. No water in room and when asked was told to drink from tap, requested a jug for the water and was told they don't have any! Reported issues with awful drainage smell on check out, was just told "thank you ". No one asked how our stay was, sadly won't return especially for the cost.

0/5 - Better off at Travel Lodge!

The only good thing about this hotel is the location. Just spent two nights at The Mercure Eastgate and were very disappointed with many aspects. We paid £170 per night. The bedrooms and corridors are in need of refurbishment. Quite frankly we have never seen such dull, badly lit and poorly decorated corridors. Our bedroom was a reasonable size but badly needed refurbishment - paintwork on the doors, doorframes, windows and walls was chipped and scruffy. The window frames look as though they haven’t been cleaned for years. The furniture and wardrobe doors were marked, chipped and scuffed. The air conditioning did not work and the windows could only be opened a couple of inches. The bed needs replacing and the quality of the duvet, pillows and bedding were the cheapest we have ever experienced in any hotel we have ever stayed at. We requested different pillows which were supplied for night 2. One of the towels was frayed. Now to breakfast! The so-called continental breakfast was very poor - the small selection of cold meats and cheese were dry (probably because the selection had been displayed for an hour or more and uncovered), the minimal selection of croissant and ‘pastry’ had either been baked the night before or very early that morning. Stogey and dry! The ‘hot’ breakast was extremely poor due to the fact that none of it was hot!!!!! The scrambled egg was rubbery, congealed and cold. We left it after two mouthfuls! We complained to the restaurant manager who assured us that our breakfast the next morning would be cooked to order. However this didn’t go exactly to plan as no one came to take our order, but instead plated up full breakfasts suddenly arrived. Unfortunately most of the breakfast items were left because once again it was not hot enough. No staff approached us to check if we were satisfied. We had given up by this time. We checked out and sat for a short while in the lounge area. We attempted to use the toilets in this area only to find the door had not been unlocked by staff. We then had to ask reception to unlock the toilet door. Staff appear to be disinterested and untrained. In all we were extremely disappointed with the hotel facilities and staff. We definitely would not recommend the hotel to anyone.

04.04.2024 la… Dear Mr. Pillay, Complaint re: stay at Mercure Oxford Eastgate hotel I write to you in respect of a stay at the Mercure Oxford Eastgate hotel between Sunday 17th March 2024 to Friday 22nd March 2024. I arrived on Sunday around 7pm. I purchased 5-night stay using Groupon for a total of £555. This was for a Classic Double Room for two people with Breakfast and a bottle of Wine. The groupon order number is 12…-052458. I was dissatisfied with my stay; I found the rooms to be unhygienic and dirty, with excrement left in the bathroom upon check-in and used utensils. In the second room I was allocated, this was dirty and had issues with flies from the bins, damp and noise from the generator. I did not sleep for the first night due to dirty conditions in the room (fly infestation) and noise nuisance from the generator next to the bins and the second room I was allocated. I felt exhausted for the rest of my stay. I checked in at around 7pm on Sunday 17th March 2024. When I checked in, I found the reception to be unhelpful and rude at check-in. I didn’t feel the receptionist had listened to the details I had provided for a booking for a double room. Mid way through providing me with my room key; the receptionist started serving someone else who pushed in front of me. I was ignored and the other person was attended to. I was not acknowledged, and no apology was offered to me. I was then handed a room key for a room in the outdoor annex building. I was not offered help with my luggage. I was left to carry a heavy suitcase and luggage outside down slippery outdoor steps without an offer of help. This was challenging, and I felt unwelcome. When I arrived at the room, and there was a dirty glass outside, it was as if someone was staying there. When I entered the room, this was a twin but I had requested a double for my 5 night stay (in my pre-arrival requests and booking and at check-in). When I entered the room, it felt like it was already in use. The bed was made but there was poo left in the toilet. It was not clean. I wouldn't leave my own bathroom at home in that state. I was surprised by the lack of cleaning standards and oversight for dirty utensils and bathroom. This is not the standard that a guest should reasonably expect, especially when checking in during the evening, allowing for cleaning schedules throughout the day. I called reception to ask for an alternative room and for help with my luggage, as I had struggled to carry it up the steps. I was allocated an alternative room 302(?), in which the window had been left open; this was next to the outdoor bins and generator. From the bins and open window, black lava and flies had come in throughout the day, and I was attacked by these throughout the night. Meanwhile, the sound from the generator was intolerable. At 5 am I called reception asking for a normal room as I couldn’t accept the nuisance from the fly infestation and noise from the bins being opened and shut and the generator. After complaining, I was given a second voucher for a bottle of wine, which remains unused - I wanted a clean, quiet, double room, which I had paid for, not 2 bottles of wine. Upon my return from business on Monday, I was allocated a different room, which I asked to view before allocation. The room I was allocated was in a better condition but it was a twin room. There was a persistent smell of damp in the lower ground floor of the hotel which is unpleasant for guests. As this was a twin room, so I pushed the beds together. Glasses, water, and wine (paid for with the voucher) were not provided. I asked for these and was given a voucher for a bottle of wine, which remained unused during my stay. I paid with vouchers, which included wine and breakfast. I had to ask for both. The terms and conditions of the purchase of my stay state the “Merchant is solely responsible to purchasers for the care and quality of the advertised goods and services”. I felt the stay at the Mercure Eastgate Oxford fell substantially below reasonable standards. I kindly ask for you to consider my complaint and offer a resolution. I would suggest, as a minimum, that a refund for at least the first night of my stay should be offered as a goodwill gesture. I would rather resolve this with Mercure directly rather than leave a negative public review on TripAdvisor or other public websites. I hope to receive a response and resolution to this matter. Best wishes, Laura M.

Very good. Breakfast was good. The only challenge I had was getting the temperature right in the room.
